Be it known that I, GEORGE D. COREY, a' citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrella Attachments, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to attachments for umbrellas and parasols, and is purposed to afford a facile means for supporting the latter structures when not in use, or when it is desirable to temporarily dispense with the same.

To this end essentially my invention consists in folding means connected with a handle for supporting the umbrella or parasol in means for clamping the folding support to the handle; and in the novel construction and combination of the constituent parts.

Other novel features will be hereinafter described and form the subject matter of the claim appended to this specification.

In the accompanying drawings which are a part of this specification Figure 1, is a front elevation of my novel attachment mounted upon an umbrella handle. Fig. 2, a side elevation of the same, showing in broken lines the distended position of the lever, and Figs. 3 and 4, sections on lines a fc and y y respectively of Fig. 2.

1 represents the ordinary handle of an umbrella or parasol in conjunction with which my attachment is to be used.

The attachment comprises a circular clamping plate or band 2 adapted to embrace the handle 1, and preferably provided intermediate its length with an enlarged portion 3 adapted to receive a monogram or ornament, but this enlargement is not essential. The plate 2 terminates in clamping ears 4 which embrace the side walls 5 of an arm 6 provided with a longitudinal channel 'l' and having its free extremity preferably slightly outwardly curved as at 8. The inner end of the arm is preferably beveled or inclined as at 10 and has integral with or soldered to its front portion an enlarged ornamental portion 11. now to be described. A pivot member connects the plate 2 and arm 6. The form thereof herein shown consists of a pin 13 which traverses perforations 14 and 15 in ears 4 and walls 5 respectively. The pin is provided at one end with a screw head 17 and upon its opposite end with threads 18 to engage a clamping nut 19. By tightening or loosening the nut 19 the plate 2 may be adjusted to handles of various diameters.

Frictionally or otherwise seated in the channeled end of the arm 6 is a strip of rubber or similar material 2O which extends slightly beyond the plane of the walls 5 and forms an adhesive surface or bearing for the arm. If desired, however, the strip may be omitted without essentially impairing the utility of my device.

When not in active use the arm 6 is folded, as shown in Fig. 2, into contact with the handle 1. If and when it is convenient to temporarily dispense with the umbrella, the arm 6 is manually distended until its beveled end `1() abuts against the handle 1 which limits the excessive outward travel of the arm. The latter is now inclined outwardly and downwardly7 from the handle, and its end 8 or the strip 20, as the case may be, rests upon the counter or other convenient piece of furniture, thereby supporting the umbrella.

l/Vhat I claim is,-

An umbrella attachment, comprising, in combination, a pivot-band adapted to be secured around an umbrella handle, an arm pivoted at one end between the ends of said pivot-band, said arm comprising an element of sheet material having its longitudinal edges down-turned to provide it with a tapered channeled formation, a beveled face formed on the upper end of said arm; adapted to bear against the surface of the handle when said arm is upraised, and a friction pad clamped between said downturned edges at the lower end of said arm and projecting to bear on a horizontal surface when said arm is upraised.
