Abstract

A single piece steel hanger for a stemmed or shanked item such as a guitar 60 includes rubber coated surfaces 31,41 which grip the stem or shank, and arms 30,40 terminating in a rubber coated fulcrum 20 which rests on a horizontal support surface 50. The guitar hangs under gravity, the bent shape of the arms causing it to pivot about point 31 whereby the neck 62 becomes clamped firmly between the surfaces 31,41.

Description

2332620 MUSICAL INSTRUMENT HANGER The present invention concerns apparatus
for hanging articles having an elongate stem or shank, for example musical instruments.
The present invention provides simple, convenient, aesthetically pleasing hanging apparatus which may be used to hang elongate-stemmed or -shanked articles, particularly elongate-stemmed articles such as musical instruments, for example a banjo.
According to the present invention there is provided hanging apparatus comprising a fulcrum and retaining arm means defining a clamp in which the elongate stem or shank of an article can be placed to be clamped under the weight of the article, the fulcrum allowing the apparatus to take up a stable position securely holding the stem or shank. The apparatus may be particularly for use in storage or display purposes of a stemmed or shanked article.
The apparatus of the present invention are of a simple basic construction and so may be essentially maintenance- free, are readily transportable and positionable, and may be used in conjunction with any supporting surface, particularly a flat surface, which acts to support the fulcrum.
The apparatus is particularly useful for e.g. musicians who may wish to display or have at hand an instrument, whilst ensuring that it does not contact any contaminating surface such as a wet or dirty pub floor. Alternatively, other stemmed articles such as glassware or e.g. roundbottemed vases may be hung using the apparatus.
Thus the fulcrum may be placed on e.g. a table and an article engaged with the retaining arm means such that the weight of the article itself causes it to be clamped by the retaining arm means. The fulcrum allows the apparatus to take a stable (i.e.
balanced) position securely holding the stem or shank. As well as being placed on a table, the fulcrum may equally be placed on a wall mounting which projects from a wall a sufficient distance to allow the apparatus to take a stable position. Thus also provided according to the present invention is a musical instrument hanger according to the present invention in combination with wall mounting means comprising a back portion adapted to be attached to a wall and a seating (an upwardly and forwardly arranged hook portion) into which can be placed the fulcrum of the musical instrument hanger.
The retaining arm may be rigid, i.e. of a fixed construction and configuration.
The retaining arm means may comprise a first arm or arms terminating in means for contacting a first face of the stem or shank, and second arm or arms terminating in means for contacting at least one other face or faces of the stem or shank.
The first arm or arms may be positioned such that they contact an upwardfacing surface of the article, the second arm or arms being positioned (in use) below the first arm or arms and contacting a downwardly- facing surface of the article. Thus an article placed between first and second arms and having a centre of gravity beneath that part which contacts the arms will cause the apparatus to take a stabl e position, the article pivoting about the (lower) second arm or arms and its movement being restricted by the first arm or arms. Thus gravity acting upon the article causes an angular force to be exerted upon it, in turn exerting a force upon the first arm or arms, causing friction in order to resist the downward-movement of the article, thereby holding it in place against the first and second arms. Thus the weight of the article causes it to be clamped by the arms - the first and second arms need not actually move relative to one-another for clamping to be effected.
Since the clamping mechanism relies upon friction, those parts of the first and second arms which contact the article may be advantageously provided with a highfriction surface, such as a rubber (although, of course, other appropriate materials will be readily apparent to one skilled in the art).
In order to stabilise the fulcrum and prevent it slipping on surfaces on which it is placed, it too may be provided with a high-friction surface.
In order to enable a range of articles to be clamped, the contacting surface of the first and/or second arms may be shaped, for example Vshaped or horizontal.
The invention will be further apparent with reference to the several figures of the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a top view of hanging apparatus; Figure 2 shows a side view of the hanging apparatus of Figure 1; Figure 3 shows a side view of the hanging apparatus of Figure 1 in use; and Figures 4 and 5 show alternative embodiments of hanging apparatus.
Hanging apparatus 10 comprises fulcrum 20 having a rubber coated surface and retaining arms 30,40 terminating in horizontal rubber-coated contacting surface 31 and V-shaped contacting surface 41 respectively. Hanging apparatus 10 is of a single-piece steel construction.
In use, hanging apparatus 10 is placed overlapping the edge of surface 5 0, the fulcrum 20 resting on surface 50. Stemmed article 60 having a centre of gravity at its rounded section 61 is placed between contacting surfaces 31,41 such that gravity causes it to pivot about surface 31 and exert a force upon contacting surface 41. Friction between stem 62 of article 60 and the rubber contacting surfaces 31,41 prevents the downward movement of article 60. Thus article 60 is held in place (i.e. is clamped) by contacting surfaces 31,41, and hanging apparatus 10 and clamped article 60 pivot about fulcrum 20 to reach a stable position (i.e. balance).
The retaining arms 30,40 of hanging apparatus 10 are angled atpoints 32, 42 respectively. Hanging apparatus 100 has fulcrum 120 and curved retaining arms 130,140 terminating in contacting surfaces 131,141 respectively.
Hanging apparatus 200 comprises fulcrum 210, retaining arms 220,230,240 terminating in contacting surface 221,231,241 respectively.
It is not intended to limit the scope of the present invention to the above examples only, many variants being readily apparent to one skilled in the art.
