ADDISON SMITH. (lll` rnen'iseunegonro,
Letters Patent No. 97,559, dated December 7, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT-IN COMBINED 'UMBRELLA AND CANE.
The Sehecule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may conce/r11.-
Be it known that I. ADDISON SMITH, of Perrysburg, in the county of Wood, in the State .of Ollio, hai-'e invented a new and useful Improvement in Umbrella-Standards; and that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying plate of drawings, hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specitioation of J:he samefwherein I have set forth the nature and principles of my said improvement, by which myinvention may be distinguished from others of a similar class, together with such partsas I claim, and desire to secure by. Letters Patent.
My invention relates to umbrella-staves or standards, and consists incertain modifications in the details of the same, whereby the said standard is rendered detachable by means of a spring-pawl attached to a cylindrical ferrule, and working in a slot -eut in the said standard, as hereinafter described.
The said standard, thus rendered detachable, mayV be used as a walking-stick.
In the plate of drawings hereunto annexed, and forming a part of this specifcation- Figure 1 is a perspective View, showing the application of my invention to au ordinary umbrella-flame.
Figure 2 is a Vertical section ofthe standard.
p The stati' or standard, which is attached in the usual manner to the ribs and runner of an umbrella of ordinary form, consists of two parts, A and B.
'lo the upper part, A, of the standard, is tted the cylindrical ferrule 0,' in such a manner that. the said upper part A fills about on ethird of the cylindrical contents.
f A spring-pawl, D, is attached to and secured by the cylindrical ferrule, in the manner and form clearly represented in iig. 2. The lower portion of the pawl-spring is curved slightly outward, in order that the same may be conveniently attached by the finger.
The pawl Eis such a form as to lit a slot, H, cut in the lower portion B of the standard, which said slot is protected from abrasion and wear by means of the semi-cylindrical plate F.
When the umbrella is in use, the parts A and B,
` of the standard, are held firmly together by means of the ferrule C and pawl-spring D.
If it is desirable t0 remove or detach the part B, in order to render the article worthless for the time being, and thus preclude the liability of its'being enchanged or stolen, or for any other purpose, it is merely necessary to press lightly upon the pawl-spring, and withdraw the part B from its ferrule-casing. being thus disengaged, may be used, if desirable, for a walking-stick.
I do. not claim broadly the detaching of the handles or slaves of umbrellas; but
What I claim, anddesire to secure by Letters Pat ent, is-
rlhe arrangement of the spring-pawl D and ferrule C ivith the lower detachable section of the standard B, for the purposes herein described, substantially as set forth. e
ADDISON SMITH.
