Description

0. H. GREEN. SNAP BAND FOB. MOLDS.
APPLICATION FILED JULY '7, 1910.
975,351. Patented Nov. 8, 1910.
UNITE i aria anion.
CHARLES H. GREEN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE S. OBERMAYER. COM- PANY, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
SNAP-BAND FOR MOLDS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. GREEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snap-Bands for Molds, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in snap-bands for molds, and more particularly in a cheap and eflicient reinforcing of the flanges.
The object of the invention is to improve upon the construction of snap-band, forming the subject-matter of U. S. Patent No. 896,379, granted IVilliam Hales, Aug. 18, 1908.
The features of my invention are more fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a perspective View of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a section on line as, m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on line a, a, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the blank from which the brace is formed.
1 represents the snap-band, substantially as shown in the Haless patent, that is, a rectangular frame 1 is formed of sheet metal, bolted together at the corner 2, to form a hollow square band. The upper and lower edges of the band are formed with the outwardly extending flanges 3, which at the corners are split, so that their adjacent edges form a V-notch, as illustrated in the dotted lines 4, Fig. l. The flanges not only strengthen the band but form the handle for convenient manipulation.
The object of my invention is to reinforce the flanges at the corners in order to 'make a contiguous flange, practically integral, without any sharp edges being exposed. To accomplish this, I form a blank 5 in the shape of a cross, formed with the rivet holes 6. This cross is bent upon itself, along the diagonal lines 7, so that the arms of the cross lie upon one another in the shape of a rectangular brace 8. This crossed blank is bent upon the flanges atthe corners and secured by rivets, the line of folding extending across the gap formed by the separated edges of the flanges 3.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. July 7, 1910.
Patented Nov. 8, 1910 Serial No. 570,855.
The band thus constructed is very cheap, durable and the flanges are practically integral. At the same time, this attachment of the brace adds to the appearance of the band and covers up any sharp corners, which would be objectionable if left exposed.
Having described my invention, I claim l. A snap-band for molds comprising a frame, composed of walls formed of a single strip of sheet material, the edges being bent outwardly forming flanges separated at the corners, in combination with a flange brace for said corner flanges, comprising a crossbent upon itself to form a rectangular member secured to said flanges, one at each corner.
2. A snap-band for molds comprising a frame composed of side walls, with the edges thereof bent at right angles forming flanges in combination with a flange corner-brace comprising a U-shaped braceplate with its limbs corresponding in outline with that of the flanges and overlapping and secured upon both sides thereof.
3. In a snap-band for molds, comprising side walls and edge flange extensions, a reinforcing brace for said flanges at their opposing ends formed of a cross of flexible material bent upon itself at the diagonal line into a rectangular structure, adapted to overlap and be secured to the flanges upon each side thereof.
4. In a snap-band for molds, of side walls and edge flange extensions thereof, a flange reinforcement at the intersection of the walls, comprising a U-shaped plate with its limbs extended to overlap and secured upon the surfaces of two wall flanges.
In a snap-band for molds, of side walls and edge flange extensions thereof, a flange reinforcement at the intersection of the walls, comprising a bent piece of material overlapped and secured to the flanges at a wall intersection, and of flange outline.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
CHARLES H. GREEN.
