UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
METAL GRATING.
Application filed July 13, 1921. Serial No. 484,365.
ing for the purpose of ventilation and the like. I accomplish this object by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the devlce;
Figure 2 is a cross section on the line 22 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is across section of a modification of the device whereby several sections may be joined together.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
My improved grating is preferably stamped from asheet of steel, iron or other metal. The two marginal edges 1 and 2 of the blank are bent downward at right angles to the intermediate central section 3 and a plurality of counterpart lateral leaves 4 are formed by cutting spaced rectangular sections on three sides and bending down the cut out sections thus formed, at right angles to the body of the blank. I thus provide a series of lateral spaced bars 6 extending from side to side of the grating section and which will 'serve,t0 strengthen and stifien the intermediate bars 6 between the slots 5.
I prefer to provide narrow uncut strips 7 I and 2. The marginal edge 2' of thebentover edge section 2 may be bent inward for the purpose ofstrengthening and stiffening 4a the device, if desired.
I find it desirable in some cases to join together in group formation a plurality of the grating sections and this may be accomplished by the optional form of the device 60 illustrated in Figure 3 in which a marginal edge section 7 of the bent-over flange 8 is bent outward and upward forming a channel 9 in which the flange 10 of adjoining section may be seated whereby a plurality of the grating sections may be joined together.
Having thus described my invention What I claim is:
1. A grating section having its marginal sides bent downward, spaced lateral bars extending from side to side and provided with integral rectangular strengthening leaves formed by bending down adjacent cut out sections and having a marginal side bent to form a channel.
2. In a gratin section the combination'of two marginal ownwardly bentedge sections, a plurality of rectangular lateral sections cut out on three sides and bent downwardly forming spaced lateral bars with integral strengthening leaves depending therefrom and uncut sections intermediate the ends of the slots and the downwardly bent edges of the grating section.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 6 day of July 1921.
\ ALEXANDER BONNELL TAPPEN.
