Description

Patented Aug. 7, 1934 UNITED STATES FABRICATED FACE FOR VENTILATORS William Thomas Truax, Battle Creek, Mich., assignor to United States Register 00., a corporation of Michigan Application May 18, 1932, Serial N0. 612,079
2 Claims.
This invention relates to the construction of what are sometimes termed fabricated faces for ventilators, registers, grilles or the like for whatever purpose intended.
The object of this invention is the production of a ventilator frame of special formation and disposition of parts thereof, and bars for the same fashioned of particular and unique shape whereby it is believed the whole may be most readily assembled and which are economically and without difiioulty manufactured in quantities.
In the accompanying drawing the individual structure of the parts of this invention are illustrated, together with the whole as assembled. Considering the drawing Fig. 1 represents a top view of one end of this invention showing all parts as connected together. Fig. 2 is an inverted or bottom view of the other end of this invention showing the form of the separable members comprising the frame, and the shape of the extended end portions thereof with the manner of arrangement of the frame members. Fig. 3 is a side view of one corner of Fig. 1 showing the relative sunken end extension of the frame member and the position of the secured top plate. Fig. 4 is a section taken on the broken line l4 of Fig. 1 showing the peculiar bar ends and frame slot engagement. Fig. 5 is a side view of the end portion of one of the bars fashioned in accordance with this invention.
Throughout the drawing and description the same number is used to refer to the same part.
What may be termed the frame of this invention is made up of separable members the end members being 1 and 2 and the side members 3 and 4. Each member has a flange spaced inwardly from the edge of the upper or face portion. The end 1 has the flange 5, the side 3 has a flange 6, and side 4 has a flange 7. The flanges carry crossed bars, of which the bars 8 are the longer and the bars 9 the shorter.
Regarding the end member 1 as illustrative of all the frame members, there will be noted in Fig. 2 the extended and angular end extensions 10 and 11 and these end portions are relatively sunken below the level of the top surface of the member, as shown in Fig. 3. Number 12 marks the angular extension of side member 3 in Fig. 2, and number 13 the like end of the side member 4. When the sunken end extensions are arranged as shown in Fig. 2 they form the corner of the frame, and when the top of the frame is observed, as shown in Fig. 1 square corner plates 14 and 15 lie upon and conform to the shape of the sunken extensions and the plates are secured permanently by any number and disposition of spot welds 16. The whole frame is then practically one piece of metal as the side and end members are welded together.
Bars of special formation are employed in this invention, and the peculiar shape of the end portion of each bar is set out in Fig. 5. Each bar has a rectangular notch 1'7 and an in-curved recess 18.
Usually, the outer edge portions of the end and side members are bent slightly downward, to relieve the fiat appearance of the frame, and as marked 19 in Fig. 3. i
The four flanges of the end and side members of this invention are provided with spaced slots, such as the slot 20 for the flange 21 of end member 2 set out in Fig. 4.
As best shown in Fig. 4 each slot 20 is made with an inwardly and upwardly extending tongue 22 projecting from the bottom of the slot, and in the assembling of the parts of this invention, before the top plates and frame members are welded together finally, the ends of the bars are introduced intothe slots in such manner that the notched part 17 engages the top of the slot, and the recess 18 takes in the tongue 22. It will be observed from Figs. 4 and 5 that the notches 1'7 engaging the upper ends of the slots and the recesses 18 engaging the inwardly and upwardly inclined tongues 22 which extend from the lower ends of the slots, prevent the displacement of the bars either up or down or to the right or left, after the whole is assembled. This assembling operation is quickly performed without any difficulty whatsoever, and the junction is fast and there is no movement between the end of the bar and the flange or slot. When the top plates and composite corners of the frame are spot welded, the whole is a unitary structure of which no part is movable with respect to any other, and the result is of unusual strength, rigidity and permanance.
Having now described this invention, I claim 1. A fabricated face of the character described, comprising separable end and side members constructed and arranged to form a frame, each of said members having terminal extended portions whereby a corner of the frame is formed by the proximity of said extended portions, the said terminal extended portions of the said members being sunken below the upper surface of the member, and a top plate permanently secured upon the said sunken extended portions of adjoining members to hold them together.
2. In a ventilator or like structure, a frame having parts provided with spaced slots each of said slots having formed therewith an inwardly and upwardly projecting tongue from the lower edge of the slots, and bars constructed with notches and recesses at their ends, the notches of the bars engaging the tops of the said slots and the recesses of the bars engaging the tongues of the said slots, whereby said bars are held against displacement endwise or vertically.
