To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOMER K. DIAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tifton, in the county of Tift and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Iniprovements in Bed-Cover Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for securing the foot end of bed covers firmly in place.
The invention has for one of its objects to provide an extremely simple and useful device of this character which will effectively hold the bed covers in proper position so that they can not be pulled olf o-r worked loose.
Another object of the invention is the pro- Vision of improved means gripping the end of the bed clothes where they are inserted in the roll or tubular holder, the latter being detachably supported on hooks or equivalent fastenings mounted on the foot of the bed.
Vith these objects in view, and others as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises the various features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be more fully described hereinafter and set forth with particularity in the claims appended hereto.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates one embodiment of the inventionz-Figure l is a perspective view of the device applied to the bed covers. Fig. 2 is a sectional view o-f the device shown applied to the bed. Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing the manner of detachably fastening the same to the supporting hooks. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the clamping means arranged in the holder for gripping the bed clothes.
Similar reference characters are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawing A designates a tubular holder or roll which is preferably made of corrugated sheet metal rolled into the desired shape with the end edges of the sheet placed apart to form a slot 1 extending the full length of the holder, the ends of the holder being open to permit access to the clamping means therein. The bottom edge of the slot or mouth l is rolled into an external reinforcing bead 2 while the opposite edge is rolled into an internal bead or ridge 3 and thereby constitutes a fixed aw against which the bed clothes are clamped.
Within the holder is arranged a movable clamping jaw designated generally by B, consisting of curved leaf springs 4 equally spaced apart and connected together by an angle bar 5 secured to the corresponding ends of the springs, the opposite ends thereof being anchored to the top of the holder A. V'Vhen the jaw B is in open position t-he bar 5 is disposed below the slot l so that the bed covers C can be inserted in the latter and when the jaw is closed it will be opposite to and in interlocking relation with the internal bead 3, with the covers gripped be tween said bead and gripping bar of the spring jaw or clamping device B, and the tension of the springs 4 is such that the aw can not spring open, but tightly grips the covers.
To facilitate the manipulation of the spring jaw, the end, springs 4 are provided with internal hooks 6 that can be engaged by the fingers for drawing the springs back in the act of engaging the bar with the bed clothes.
In applying the holder to the bed covers the sheet, blankets, and counterpane are placed evenly together and the foot edge of the bed covering is placed in the slot or mouth l of the holder and then the spring jaw is manipulated to close it against the portions of the covering extending into the holder so as to be clamped in the manner shown in 1Eig. 2.
The holder with the bed clothes secured thereto is supported on hooks 8 suitably secured to the foot of the bed, the hooks being curved in such a manner as to extend into the slot 1 as shown. The hooks may be of different designs for attachment to metal or wooden bedsteads.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is 1. A device of the class described comprising a holder made of a sheet rolled into tubular form with its opposite edges spaced apart to provide a mouth extending from one end to the other for receiving the marginal portion of bed covering and open at its ends, and a device mounted in the holder and manipulated through the open ends thereof for engaging the bed covering.
2. A device of the class described comprising a tubular holder having a longitudinal mouth, an internal bead formed in the mouth, and a removable jaw cooperating Withthe bead for gripping a bed covering.
3. A device of the class described comprising a. tubular holder having a longitudinal mouth, and a spring clamping jaw mounted in the holder and including a plurality of springs supporting and connected together by a bar arranged to grip a bed covering against the interior of the holder.
4:. A device of the class described comprising a. tubular holder having a longitudinal mouth, a spring clamping jaw mounted in the holder and including a plurality of springs supporting and connected together y a bar arranged to grip a bed covering against the holder, and handles at the ends of the jaw.
5. A device of the class described comprising a corrugated sheet metal tubular structure having open ends and a mouth eX- tending from one open end to the other for receiving the end of a bed covering, and means mounted Within the structure to grip the bed covering. Y
6. A device of the class described comprising acorrugated sheet metal tubular structure having' open ends and a mouth eX- tending from one open end to the other for receiving the end of a bed covering, means mounted Within the structure to grip the bed covering, said means including a plurality of leaf springs, and an angle bar secured to the free ends of the springs and disposed adjacent the mouth for gripping the bed covering.
7. A device of the class described comprising a tubular structure open at its end and having a longitudinal mouth, an internal ridge extending along one edge of the mouth and a spring javv mounted in the structure and normally disposed at the side of the mouth opposite from the said ridge and movable into interlocking relation with the ridge to clamp a bed covering between the latter and jaw.
