CHARLES ROSS, JR., OF MAGETOWN, NEAR DUNEDIN, NEW ZEALAND.
BLANKE T- GRIP.
No. eer/,esa
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 25, 1908.
Patented July 6, 1909.
Serial No. 454,789.
.To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that l, Cuantas ltoss, Jr., a subject of lilis Majesty the King of Great Britain, residing at Macetown, near the cityv of Dunedin, in the lritish .Dominion of New Zealand, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blanket-Grips, of which the li'ollowing is a specification. u
This invention relates to blanket grips; and has for its object to provide a simple, cheap and eilllcient device i'or attachment to the i'rame of a bed or mattress for the purpose of gripping blankets or other bed covers and prevent their removal or accidentally falling oif.
To this end the invention comprises a gripping device preferably operated by resilient means to grip the blanket between itself and the bed frame, a supplementary hinged grip being provided to cooperate with the main grip for producing a more secure holding device.
lilith these and other objects in view the invention consists of the construction, com bination and arrangement of parts, herein after described. and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved grip mounted on a wooden base Jlate; Fig. 2, an edge view oit the same with a blanket shown :in position and held by the gripping device; 3, a front elevation of the base plate for the gripping device made oi metal, the spring and clips which are simin lar to those in Fig. l, being omitted, and; Fig. d, represents an edge view of the same with a modiilied form of gripping device attached thereto.
Similar reference letters are used 'for the same parts in all of the iigures.
In the drawing, A represents a part oil' a bed or mattress frame on which are 'fastened one or more base plates B, by means ol.' a screw C, and held from turning by pins ll., where said base plates are made of wood, as in Figs. 1 and 2,but if made of metal, as in Figs. 3 and 4, an arm integral therewith extends below and on the inside of the bed frame A to support a thumb screw C1, which on being turned in the proper direction bears against the inside of said 'f1-ame. The metal frame B is provided. on its inner face with )ins H which enter the outer surface of the bed trame, when the frame B1 is tigl'itened by the screws C1. These pins hold said base plate from turning.
Pivotally mounted on the base plate B is a clip lll, preferably formed of wire, said clip having an elongated head parallel with the bed iframe A and dependiiiig parallel arms E2 joined by a cross bar llll passing through bearings, such as staples lllL driven into the base plate B, Surrounding the cross-bar E3 is a coiled spring l), one end oil.' which bears against the base plate B, while its other end exteinls uiiivmrdly and engages one arm. E2 of the clip lil, tending at all times to move said clip vtoward the bed frame A. For convenience in retracting the frame E, a handle El is hinged thereto which may be grasped by the hand and drawn outwardly against torsional action. o'f the spring l) when a blanket G is to be inserted or released from the device. rhe elongated head of the clip E projects above the bz so plate l and is bent inwardly toward the bed frame A as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
A supplemental clip F of approximately U-shape extends across the base plate B near its upper end. The sides or arms of said clip project upwardly above the top of said base plate and are hinged to the side edges of the same. ln operation, after a bed has been spread the handle lill is grasped and the clip E drawn away from the bed, said clip rocking in the staples E4 and tensioning the spring l). The edge of the blanket Cr :is drawn over the supplemental clip F and folded under the bottom bar F, thus placing the edge of said blanket between the clip 'll1 and the outer side of the base plate li. 'lhc clip E is new released and .is forced by the spring l) toward the bed, which action causes the blanket to be clamped between. the arms E2 of the clip and the supplemental clip ll and between the latter and base plate B. The inwardly bent head of the clip projects over the simplemental clip and, by reason of its inclination, forces said blanket into the opening of said head, thus tightly clamping `the edge of the blanket against accidental reilnoval or falling oil the bed. lt is to be understood that a bed will usually be supplied with a number of these devices on each side and if desired at the foot.
A modified form of the clip is represented in Fig. il. .ln thiscase the arms lll of said clip, are in a substantially verticalv position, while the head thereof stands perpendicular to the arms and projects a short distance over the frame e et the bed. Pivotally supported to the head E above the bed frame A is a supplemental clip F1, which when not in use rests against the outer corner of the bed frame A, as shown in Fig. 4. In this instance the edge of the blanket is secured in the clip by passing it between the bed frame A and the supplemental clip F1 and then folding it around the lower end of said clip on the inner side of the arms E2 of clip E. In either case any effort to remove the blanket will be resisted by the binding or gripping action of the clips, where said blanket is folded over the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
l. A blanket grip comprising a base plate, a clip pivoted thereon and having its head bent or inclined inwardly, resilient means tending at all times to press said clip into operative position, and a supplementary clip pivotally mounted on any suitable part of the grip and adapted to cooperate with the main clip for gripping the edge of the blanket.
2. A blanket grip comprising a base plate adapted to be secured on the side of a bed frame, a hinged clip mounted thereon and having a laterally elongated open head to receive a fold of the blanket, said head being bent or inclined to extend over the upper end of said base plate and adapted to swing bent or inclined to extend over the upper end f of said base plate and provided with vertically disposed arms connected at their lower ends by a cross bar, a coiled spring surrounding said cross bar and bearing at one end against said plate and at its opposite end against one or' the arms of said clip, a supple mental clip pivotally connected to the sides of said base plate near the top and extended across the front of the saine, and a swinging handle mounted on the spring actuated clip.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
