Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, THEODORE A. Rous- SEAU, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Holding and Severing Tickets, Checks, and the Like, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in devices for holding and severing tickets, checks and the like and the primary object of my invention is to provide a device of this character which is adapted to hold the tickets, checks or the like in position to be torn and with which the tickets, etc, may be more accurately and expeditiously severed than has heretofore been possible.

A further object of my invention is to provide a device of this character which will be simple in construction, cheap to manufacture and durable.

WVith these and other objects in view, my I invention consists in certain constructions,

5 designates a block made of wood, metal or cardboard which preferably and as shown is of the same size and shape as the tickets,

checks or the like which are to be severed. From this base project the holding plates 6, 6 which extend up from opposite sides of the block 5. These plates can be of any desired shape or size and secured to the base in any desired way. I have illustrated the plates 6 as secured to the base by being L- shaped and projecting under the base with the end passed up through an opening in the base and clenched thereon,with the holding part 6 projecting up from the edge of the base. On the opposite sides of the base 5 from that carrying the holders 6, I provide the holding and guide plates 7, which may also be constructed in any desired way. As shown in Fig. 1, these holding and guiding plates 7 are similar to the plates 6 and are secured to the base 5 in the same way. The holding devices 6 and 7 will retain a plurality of superimposed tickets or checks upon the base 5 in proper position to be severed along the desired lines.

In illustrating one use of my invention I have shown upon the base a plurality of railroad tickets constructed in accordance with my invention in tickets set forth in my application N 0. 473,540 above referred to. In the use of these tickets it is necessary that they be severed along a predetermined line with the exception of one or more places thereon, where a V-shaped line of severance I is produced. These V-shaped lines of severance are to indicate the destination of the passenger purchasing the ticket, the character of the ticket, etc. By tearing the tick ets in this manner a passengers section is produced and also the agents or auditors stub. By holding the tickets in proper position on the base it is possible to tear a plurality of tickets which are to be duplicates of each other at the same time.

By reference to Fig. 1 it will be seen that one side of the stops 7 is in line with the line of severance across the ticket, so that when a straight edge is placed against this edge of the guides 7 the tickets will always be severed on the same transverse line as is necessary.

EX- tending downwardly from the straightedge adjacent its ends are the guides 25 which are adapted to fit over the sides of the pile of tickets or other sheets to be severed to hold the straight edge in proper position longitudinally. Referring again to the illustration of the use of my invention used in the drawings, it will be seen that when the straightedge is placed as shown in Fig. 1 with its tearing edge against the sides of the guides 7, this edge will be in proper position to cause the severance of the ticket along the line of division between the agents stub andthe ticket itself.

In order to provide for forming the deep V-shaped notch in the ticket proper, a movable V-shaped cutter must be mounted upon the straightedge. In the form of construction by which I have illustrated my invention, the rod 10 heretofore described is for the purpose of supporting this V-shaped cutter in such a manner that it may readily be moved longitudinally of the straightedge to the proper position to sever the ticket along the lines desired.

In the construction by which I have illus trated my invention, 11 designates a yoke provided with an upwardly extending handle portion 12, the yoke being formed in its opposite sides with the openings 13, slidable upon the rod 10. This yoke carries the V- shaped cutter which consists of a trowelshaped cutter 14, having an upwardly and rearwardly projecting portion 15 which in the form shown is pivoted upon a pin 16 mounted in the sides of the yoke above the bearings 13, the portion 15 at each. side of the pin 16 extending downwardly so as to loosely embrace the upper portion of the rod 10. By this construction it will be seen that when the yoke is tipped back the shoulders 19 of the rearwardly projecting portion 15 will contact with the edge of the yoke and thus raise the cutter in addition'to the rising movement imparted by the oscillation of the yoke. When the yoke is pushed forward, the cutter will move down against the topmost sheet of the pile to be severed and when the cutter rests upon the sheet, it will be firmly held thereon by the engagement of the downwardly projecting end 19 engaging the rod 10. When the line of severance is not always the same distance from the edge of the ticket or the like, the guide 7 can be made adjustable, and in Fig. 4 I have shown pins 20 which can be placed in any one of the plurality of openings 21 in the projections 22 of the base 5. By adjusting these guide pins in these various openings the line of severance made by the straightedge can be changed to suit various forms of tickets.

For the purpose of illustrating one use of my invention, I will describe the same as used for severing tickets made in accordance with my invention as disclosed in my application above referred to. As will be seen from Fig. 1, a plurality of these tickets is placed upon the base 5 and held in proper position by the projecting plates 6 and 7. When it is desired to issue one of these tickets to a given destination, the straightedge is placed against the side of the guiding plates 7 which brings the cutting edge of the straightedge in line with the main line of severance between the two parts of the ticket. The namesof the various stat-ions are printed at an angle 'to the line of severance between the two parts of the ticket and adjacent thereto. The cutter 14 is now moved along the rod ,10 of the straightedge until its edge extends along just above the particular station to be indicated as the destination and the ticket is torn in the manner indicated in Fig. 1. If a half ticket is to be issued, the ticket would also be torn along the line indicated by the position of the cutter in Fig. 1 and after this tear is made the cutter would then be moved to a position to tear ust above the station which it is desired to indicate.

It is to be understood that the particular form of the stops 6 and 7, of the straightedge 8, the angular cutter 14, and the means of supporting the same movably upon the straightedge are not essential to my invention but may be varied as found desirable without departing from my invention.

I realize that considerable variation is possible in the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention and I therefore do not intend to limit myself to the specific form shown and described.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. In a device for severing tickets, checks and the like, the combination with a base, of a straight edge, upwardly projecting lugs extending from the opposite ends of the straight edge, a rod supported in the lugs and extending between the same, a yoke slidably mounted upon the rod, a trowelshaped cutter pivotally mounted in the yoke, and means on the base to engage the straight edge to aline the same with the desired line of severance of the ticket.

In a device for severing tickets, checks and the like, the combination with a base, of guides extending upwardly from the edges of the base, whereby a plurality of tickets or the like may be held in position on the base, one pair of said guides being disposed on opposite sides of the base with one of the sides of each of the guides in line with the line of severance of the ticket or the like to be severed, a straightedge, upwardly projecting lugs extending from the opposite ends of the straightedge, a rod supported in the lugs and extending between the same, a yoke slidably mounted upon the rod, said yoke being provided with an upwardly projecting handle portion, and a trowel-shaped cutter pivotally mounted in the yoke 3.
