SIECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 416,737, dated December 10. 1889. Application filed August 24, 1888. Serial No. 283,659. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PAUL NATHAN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Gages, of which the following is a full, true, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improved gage specially adapted to machines for cutting paper or similar purposes, in which the sheets of the material to be out are held under a clamp, and in which it is desired to cut a width narrower than the clamp from the compressed edges of said material. In these machines a gage is employed to measure the width of the strip to be cut from the compressed layers, which gage, moving upon a scale, determines the exact width so cut off; but since the edge of the material must be under the clamp the gage cannot rest under said clamp without interfering with the action of the clamp; and I therefore have devised a removable gage which can be moved beneath the clamp, and subsequently withdrawn therefrom before the clamp is depressed, thereby gaging the material to be cut, while at the same time it passes outside of the traverse of the clamp.
My invention will be readily understood from the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a plan view of the ad justable part of the gage, showing the gage open; Fig. 2, an end view of the same; Fig. 3, a View corresponding to Fig. 1, showing the gage closed; Fig. 4, a vertical section through the machine, showing the clamp elevated and the gage arranged to gage the material to be cut; and Fig. 5, a plan View of the same, with part of themechanism removed. l
A represents the table upon which the gage slides and the material to be cut rests. B is the scale, upon the same. The gage itself is shown at O, with the adjustable part D E attached thereto by set-screws F. The gage itself may be fed bythe feeding-screw G, and the clamp H set by the screw J.
The knife K is operated by any suitable mechanism.
L represents the pile of sheets to be cut.
The adjustable gage D E is constructed on the general principle of a parallel ruler having pivoted arms M, which, by preference, have right-angled projections N, which, when the gage is opened, as shown in Fig. 1, bear against the strips 0 P of the gage. These strips or surfaces 0 P may be cut away, as shown, to allow of the passage of the arms M when the gage is closed, as shown in Fig. 3. A clip B may be employed to hold the gage open, as shown in Fig. 1.
The operation of my machine can now be understood. The clamp H being raised and the gageE thrown forward to the proper point, as shown in Fig. 4, the paper L is moved up against it, and the gage is thenwithdrawn out of the way of the clamp, which is then forced down to hold the paper in position preparatory to the cutting by the ,knife K. Again the gage is thrown forward and the sheets fed to it. The arms M determine the fact that the gage is moved forward exactly the same distance on each occasion. It is obvious, of course, that in building new machines the main gage C may be dispensed with and the adjustable gage only used; but my apparatus can be applied to existing machines in the manner shown.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, in a gage for cuttingmachines, of two parallel bars provided with stops, and armspivotally secured to the bars and adapted to bear against said 1 stops. and limitthe movement of said bars, substantially as described.
2. The combination, in a gage for cuttingmachines, of two parallel bars, arms pivotally secured thereto, and a lock for securing said bars in position, substantially as described.
