Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed August 14, 1911. Serial No. 643,868.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MANsnL E. NAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand Splitting-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a device for cut ting boards or the like longitudinally into strips of a desired width.
An important object of this invention is to provide a device of the above character, which will be easy to operate and positive in fulfilling its function.
Ordinarily planking or boards of about three-eights to one and three-eighths inches thick, are cut longitudinally into strips by the employment of a hand rip saw, and this operation as is well known is very tedious.
It is therefore, an object of my invention to provide a device, which will cut boards longitudinally in a more expeditious and easy manner than may be accomplished with a hand rip saw.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same, Figure 1 is a side view of the device, Fig. 2 is a side view of the guide employed in connection with the device illustrated in Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a cross-section view taken on line 3-3 of Iig. 1, Fig. 4 is an end view of the guide shown in Fig. 2, Fig. 5 is an elevation of a clamping pin used in connection with the guide illustrated in Fig. 2, Fig. 6 is a side view of the disk cutter, Fig. 7 is a rear end view of the device shown in Fig. 1, parts thereof being removed, and, Fig. 8 is a top plan View of the device as a whole and showing the application of the same.
In the drawings, wherein is illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates a plank or board, which, for the sake of illustration, it is as sumed to be about three eighths of an inch thick. This plank or board is supported by any suitable means.
My improved cutting device comprises a stock or body portion 2, provided at its center with a longitudinally disposed slot 3.
The stock 2 is provided near its forward end and upon its upper side with spaced alined brackets 4, having openings 5 formed therethrough for the reception of a connecting rod 6. The brackets 4 have clamping bolts 7 tapped through the same to engage the rod 6 and rigidly hold the same in place. A support 8 has its forward end 9 pivotally mounted upon the rod 6 and disposed between the brackets 4;, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 8. This support is rovided centrally thereof with an enlarge portion con stituting spaced walls 10, and a handle portion 11 is formed upon the rear end of said enlarged portion. This handle portion comprises a relatively thin strip of material, provided with a cut-out portion 12 for forming a hand opening. The reduced ends 13, which result from the formation of the opening 12, are connected by means of a suitable handle grip 141-. The support 8 and all of its members above described may preferably be formed of a single casting. The stock 2 is provided near its rear end with a raised portion 15, upon which are formed spaced upstanding handle guides 16. The handle portion 11 is adapted to fit between the handle guides 16 and to have oscillatory movement between the same.
The walls 10 of the enlarged portion of the support 8, are provided with alined semi-cylindrical openings 17 which cotiperate with corresponding openings 18 formed through brackets 19. Each of the brackets 19 is rigidly and removably secured to its wall 10, by means of bolts 20. The openings 17 and 18 cooperate together as above stated to form a pair of alined cylindrical openings to rotatably hold a shaft 21. This shaft is provided at its center with an enlarged sorew-threaded portion 22 adapted to receive thereon clamping nuts 23. Between the nuts 23 and upon the shaft 21 is arranged a disk cutter 2 1, provided with a sharpened cutting edge 25. This disk cutter is mounted to pass through the slot 3, when the support 8 is oscillated downwardly sufficiently. The raised portion 15 is provided with a transverse opening 26, adapted to receive a connecting rod 27 corresponding to and arranged in parallel relation to the rod (3. The rod 27 is clamped in a rigid position, to the portion 15, by means of a bolt 28, which is tapped through said portion 15.
The connecting rods 6 and 27 are arranged transversely of the stock 2, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 8. A guide 29, is provided to cotiperate with the connecting rods 6 and 27, comprising an inverted L-shaped body portion 30, having transverse openings 31 extending through the horizontal portion thereof and near its ends. The transverse openings 31 are adapted to slidably receive the free ends of the rods 6 and 27, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 8. The inverted L-shaped body portion 30 is further provided with a longitudinal cylindrical opening 32, which is arranged below the transverse openings 31 and leads into the same. The longitudinal opening 32 is provided near one end thereof with a slightly reduced screw-threaded portion 33. The opening 32 is adapted to receive a clamping pin 34, having a slightly reduced screw-threaded portion. The clamping pin 34 is provided at one end thereof with a knob 36, whereby said pin may be rotated and the screw-threaded portion 35 engages the screw threads formed within the reduced portion 33 of the opening 32 and the pin 34 will be moved longitudinally. The clamping pin is provided with spaced peripheral grooves 37, which are adapted to register with the transverse openings 31, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2. It is thus obvious that the ends of the rods 6 and 27, may be clamped to the inverted L-shaped portion 30 by moving the clamping pin 34 longitudinally. An auxiliary inverted L-shaped member 38 is arranged upon the body portion 30 and removably secured thereto by means of screws 39. The auxiliary member 38 is disposed to engage the plank 1, and in the course of time the same might become considerably worn, in which instance it may be removed and a new one put in its place.
By the construct-ion above described, it is V obvious that the guide 29 may be moved away from or toward the stock 2 and clamped in a desired position to the rods 6 and 27. It is to be understood that the rods 6 and 27 may be made in any desired lengths, thereby enabling my device to be employed to cut boards of varying widths.
. In the use of my device, the stock 2 is placed upon a board or plank as shown in Fig. 8, and the guide 29 is arranged to engage one edge of the plank. The stock 2 is then moved longitudinally of the plank and the support 8 pressed downwardly to force the disk 24 through the slot 3 to engage said plank. At first the disk 24 is pressed against the plank 1 to cut a shallow line, and then the operation is repeated and the disk pressed further downwardly to cut the plank longitudinally. I have found it advantageous to first cut the plank longitudinally upon one side, and then reverse the plank and cut the same on the other side until said plank is divided into two parts.
I wish it understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that certain changes in the shape, size and arrengements of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having described my invention I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, a stock, provided with a slot, a support pivotally connected to said stock and having a handle port-ion, handle guides arranged upon said stock to receive the handle por tion therebetween, and a disk cutter rotatably mounted upon said support and disposed to enter said slot when the support is oscillated downwardly.
2.- In a device of the character described, a stock, a disk cutter connected to said stock, a guide, connecting means between said guide and stock, and a clamping pin provided with peripheral grooves for locking said guide in a desired position upon said connecting means.
3. In a device of the character described, a stock, a disk cutter connected to said stock, connecting rods connected to said stock, a guide provided with transverse openings to slidably receive said connecting rods, said guide being provided with longitudinal openings having communication with said transverse openings, and a clamping pin provided with peripheral grooves to lock said guide in a desired position upon said connecting rods.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination with cutting mechanism, of a rod connected therewith, a guide having a transverse opening formed therethrough to receive the rod and further provided with a longitudinal opening, and an element adjustably mounted in the longitudinal opening for clamping engagement with the rod.
