To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KIcHIZo NARAHARA, a subject of Japan, residing at Alameda, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash Holders and Locks, of which the following is a specifica tion.
This invention relates to combined sash holders and locks, and the principal object of the same is to provide means whereby the upper and the lower sash of a window may be supported in an open position and also means for locking said sashes in either an open or a closed position so that the sashes cannot be operated until the lock is released.
In carrying out the objects of the invention it is contemplated providing a combined holder and lock that may be set in one side of a window casing and provided with oppositely projecting pivotally mounted holding arms for engaging with racks of the usual window sashes, said racks being provided with regularly spaced side catches with which locking fingers may be engaged to prevent movement of the sashes, said arms and fingers being operated from a common shaft on which cam mechanism is mounted for first operating the holding arms to cause them to engage with the racks and then operating the fingers to cause them to engage with the side catches.
In the practical application of the invention it will be understood, of course, that the essential features thereof are necessarily susceptible of changes in details and structural arrangements, one preferred and practical embodiment of which is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a fragmentary view in front elevation of a window sash and easing, showing the application of the present invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the sash casing being broken away to show the improved holder and lock and the racks carried by the window sashes. Fig. 3 is a detail fragmentary view in front elevation of one side of the window casing showing the holder and lock applied thereto. Fig. 4 is a view in side elevation of the holder and lock. Fig. 5 is a similar view shown partly in section. Fig. 6 is a horizontal sectional view taken ./n the line w-m, Fig. 4. Figs. 7 and 8 are detail fragmentary views of sash racks for the upper and lower sashes.
Referring to said drawings by numerals, l designates one of the vertical sides of a window casing the front face of which is provided with the vertical grooves 2-3 for the upper and lower window sash. Said casing member 1 has a frame 4 of the improved holder and lock seated therein with its front end plate 5 flush with the front surface of said member. Said end plate 5 is preferably in the form of a circular disk and is provided with two slots 67, one slot being in groove 2 and the other slot being in the groove 3 and each slot having an enlarged inner end. Slot 6 extends downward from the center of the disk and slot 7 extends upward from the center of the disk.
The frame 4 has the sides of its inner end portion open, each open portion being spanned by a bearing plate 8 in which the horizontal shaft 9 is rotatably mounted, one end of said shaft projecting through one side of the member 1 and being equipped with a knob or finger grip 10 by means of which said shaft may be readily manually operated. The shaft 9 has two cams 11l2 fast thereon, said cams being arranged at right angles to one another. Cam 11 is loosely surrounded by the elliptically slotted end 13 of an arm 14, the other end of said arm 14 being equipped with an angular end plate 15 which is provided with looking fingers 1616 that are projected through the enlarged inner ends of slots 6''( by a rotation of shaft 9 to cause cam 11 to engage wit-h the elliptical slot in the end 13 and slide the arm 14 within frame 4.
The end plate 15 has a guide opening 17 formed through it to one side of the arm 14 through which arm 18 is slidable, said arm 18 having its inner end provided with an elliptical slot 19 that looselysurrounds cam 12. The outer end of arm 18 projects be yond member 15 and carries a similar angular end plate 20, each end of which is equipped with a guide opening 21 for the locking fingers 16 and 16 The front surface of plate 20 is provided with spaced apart pivot ears 22, in which one end of the holding fingers 23-24 are pivotally mounted, the free ends of said fingers projecting through their respective slots 67, the finger 23 projecting upward and the finger 24 projecting downward. Each of said fingers 23-24 have a spring connection 25 with plate 20, said springs being of the expansion type and constantly exerting a pressure:
tending to force the fingers through their slots 67.
It is preferred to use the improved holder and lock in connection with the types of sash racks shown in Figs. 7 and 8, the 'ack shown in Fig. 7 being for use in connection with a lower sash and the one shown in Fig. 8 being for use in connection with an upper sash. The lower sash rack 26 has its teeth 27 on a downward incline, and are adapted to be engaged by the holding finger 28. Said rack has regularly spaced laterally projecting side catches 28, which correspend in number to the teeth 27, said catches being adapted for locking engagement with the finger 1G.
The upper sash rack 29 is similarly equipped with teeth 30 and side catches 31, said teeth being obviously arranged in a reverse manner to that of the teeth 27, and adapted for engagement with the finger 24, the catches 31 being adapted for locking engagement with the finger 16 From the foregoing it will be seen that by rotating shaft 9, cam 12 will force arm 18 outward and cause the holding fingers 2; -23 to engage with the teeth 27-31 of the racks 2629, which engagement obviously holds the window sashes open. A continuation of the rotation of shaft 9 will cause cam 11 to force arm 14 outward so that looking fingers 16-46 will engage the side catches of racks 26-29, and thereby prevent movement of either sash.
It will be understood, of course, that the preferred location of the improved holder and lock is adjacent the mid-rail meeting point of the two sashes.
W hat I claim as my invention is 1. A combined sash holder and lock comprising a frame, a' shaft rotatable therein, a pair of spaced apart cams fast on said shaft, an arm slidable in said frame and having one end provided with a slot that loosely surrounds one of said cams, sash holding fingers carried by the other end of said arm, a second arm slidable in said frame'and having a slotted end that surrounds the other cam, and locking fingers carried by the other end of said last mentioned arm.
2. A combined sash holder and lock comprising a frame having an end plate, said plate provided with spaced apart slots, a sash locking arm slidable in said frame and having fingers at one end that project through said slots, a sash holding arm also slidable in said frame and provided with an end plate, fingers pivotally connected to said plate, and projecting through said slots, and means for independently actuating said locking and holding arms.
3. A combined sash holder and lock con:- prising a frame, a shaft rotatable therein, a pair of cams fast thereon and arranged at different angles, a sash holding arm slidable in said frame and engaging one of said cams, oppositely projecting holding fingers carried by said arm, a sash locking arm also.

5. In a device of the character described the combination of sash racks having inclined teeth and laterally projecting spaced apart side catches, and holding and look ing fingers adapted forengagement with said teeth and catches respectively.
6. A sash rack comprising inclined rack teeth, and laterally projecting spaced apart side catches.
7. A combined sash holder and lock comprising a frame having a front plate, said plate provided with slots, a shaft mounted in the said frame and provided with a hand grip, a pair of oppositely projecting cams carried by said shaft, a sash holding arm slidable in said frame and having one end engaging one of said cams, a pair of spaced apart parallel locking fingers projecting from the opposite end of said arm and, adapted to be projected through the slots of said frame plate, a second arm slidable in said frame and having one end engaging the other cam and its opposite end projecting between said locking fingers and provided with a plate, and holding fingers pivotally connected to said last mentioned plate and 7 adapted to be projected through the slots of the frame plate.
