MINERS LAMP.

Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DoMiNion MIGLIO, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Calumet, in the county of Houghton and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Miners Lamps, of which the following is a specilication.

This invention is an improvement in miners lamps, especially designed to strengthen and reinforce the lamp, and to afford in connection with the reinforcing means, the shield or protector which will also operate as reflector; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawing Figure 1 is a side view of a lamp provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of one of the protectors removed from the lamp. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the protector partly broken away at the top, and with the lower wing extended in blank form. Fig. t is a front elevation of the attachment showing a somewhat different form of upper wing from that illustrated in Figs. l and 2. Fig. 5 is a side view of a lamp with a somewhat different form of attachment, and Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the attachment as shown applied in Fig. 5.

By my invention, I seek to provide a simple construction by which to reinforce and strengthen the ordinary miners lamp, and to provide at the same time a protector to shield the head of the miner from the heat of the lamp, which protector will also operate as a reflector, by directing the rays from the lamp in the use of the invention.

The lamp A may be of the form shown in Fig. 1, with the spout A', or may be of the form shown at B in Fig. 5, with the spout B shown in the said ligure.

Referring now to the construction shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, it will be noticed from Fig. l that a protector C is applied to the spout A', and is formed with a main plate C which conforms to the lamp body A, and has an opening G2 which lits snugly around the base of the spout A. The protector also has a lower wing C3, an upper wing C* and the opening C2 is formed by an incision C5, which does not entirely separate the material from the body C of the plate, but leaves a connection at C6 between the body of the plate and the lower end of a brace plate CT, which is curved in cross section, as shown in Figs. l and 2. This plate underlies said spout at the base thereof and is conformed thereto in such manner as to reinforce and strengthen the spout at the connection thereof with the body of the can, so that when the protector is applied, as shown in Fig. l the brace plate (ll will reinforce und strengthen the base of the spout., and the connection thereof with the body of the can and the body of the plate will reinforce and strengthen the can body adjacent to the juncture thereof with the base of the spout. At the same time the reflector and the pro tector plate extend up in such relation to the mouth of the spout as to reflect light on to the work, and also protect the head of the miner from the heat of the lamp.

The lower wing C3 has a special function in that it affords means for providing a strong reinforcing band at the base of the lamp, and immediately underlying the juncture thereof with the base of the spout. In doing this the wing C3, which it will be noticed widens toward its lower end, is folded back upon itself a number of times to form a narrow band, as shown at C1, which band connects at its middle portion with the lower end of the body C', being integral therewith while the wide lower edge of the wing C3 gives sufficient length to the double band to permit the same to extend sufficiently around the lamp body to form a brace or reinforcing medium at the lower edge of the said can body.

The protector is formed usually from a sheet of tin cut into the desired shape, and when applied to the lamp body is soldered, brazed Vor otherwise secured in place.

By the described construction, it will be noticed l strengthen the lamp at the joint between the spout and the body, and at the joint of the spout with the bottom of the lamp body, and the flared wing Ci operates as a reflector when the lamp is applied to the cap of the miner in the ordinary manner, and also acts as a shield to the eyes when the lamp is carried in the hand. This upper wing C4 also operates as above suggested to protect the head of the miner from the heat of the lamp, and to keep the flame from the lamp from coming in contact with the miners hat or cap.

on some object to bring the wick and oil out of the lamp spout and in proper condition for use because of the thickness of such oil. rlhis tapping bends the lamp and causes leaks at the j oints, and my invention, by the reinforcing bands C13 and the brace plates CT, in connection with the body plates C, operates to avoid these conditions and to provide a means for strengthening the lamp and increasing its dura-bility.

In the construction shown in Fig. 4, I show a somewhat different reflector wing at D from the wing CAL shown in Figs. l and 2. Y

In the construction shown in Fig. 5, the lamp is somewhat different in design from that shown in Fig. l and the protector shown in Fiv's. 5 and 6 conforms to the lamp shown in Fig. 5, and this protector is also illustrated without the reflector' wing, which latter may be omitted whenever desired without departing fiom some of the principles of my invention.

I claim:

l. A miners lamp having a body and spout and provided in connection therewith, with a protector having a body plate encircling tlie spout at the base thereof, and provided with a brace plate extending from said body plate upwardly along the under side of the spout and conformed thereto, and also having a shield and reflector wing projecting from the upper edge of the main plate above the spout, the protector being provided below the juncture of its body plate with the brace plate with a projecting wing folded upon itself formingabrace band extending along the lower edge of the lamp body below the juncture thereof with the spout substantially as set forth.

2. A miners lamp having a body and a spout, and provided with a protector having a body plate encircling the body of the spout and conformed to the body of ythe lamp, and also having in fixed relation to said body plate, a brace plate curved to conform to and underlying the spout substantially as set forth.

3. A protector or shield for miners lamps having a body plate adapted to encircle a lamp spout at the base thereof and provided with a brace plate extended from said body plate upwardly and at an incline to underlie the under side of the spout and curved in cross section to conform thereto, a reflector wing projecting from the upper edge of the body plate and a brace band extending laterally at the lower edge of the body plate substantially as and for the purposes as set forth.

ll. A protector or shield for miners7 lamps having a body plate curved in cross section to conform to a lamp body and having an opening adapted'to receive a lamp spout and provided with an upwardly inclined brace plate crossing the line of said opening and curved to conform to a lamp spout eX- tended through said opening substantially as set forth.

5. A protector or shield for miners lamps comprising a body plate having an opening for a lamp spout and provided below said opening with a depending brace plate folded upon itself forming a manifold brace band extending laterally at the lower edge of the body plate and curved to conform to a lamp body substantially as set forth.`

6. A protector for miners lamps comprising a body plate having an opening for the passage of a lamp spout, and provided with a reinforcing band below said opening curved longitudinally to conform to a lamp body substantially as set forth.

7. A miners lamp having a body and a spout and provided with a protector having a body plate encircling the spout and also having below the spout a depending brace plate which is folded upon itself forming a manifold brace band extending alongside the body of the lamp at the lower edge thereof and adapted to bear the tapping of the lamp in bringing the wick and oil in proper position and condition for use, substantially as set forth.
