Be itH known thatI, ERNns'r R. LE MAN- QUAIs, a citizen of the Unitedtates, and a resident of Bellemead, in the county of Somerset and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Universal Cut-Out and Switch-Block Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to cutouts and switch block holders, and it has for its object to provide one which will support the base at a distance from the surface of. the cabinet, and which may be used with bases of different forms and sizes.
Still other objects of the invention will appear in the following description of the invention.
One of the difficulties with which cutout cabinet manufacturers have had to contend, is the fact that the cutout and switch block manufacturers have failed to standardize their porcelain blocks, so that while these are all used for the same purpose and are all installed in steel cabinets, each cutout manufacturer has insisted that his design is the proper one, so that to -day there is on the'market a large variety of different length and width blocks, all of 'which have the screw holes located in different places. My device is designed to overcome this difiiculty, as by its use only two drilled and tapped holes are necessary in each section of the cabinet shown, and yet this will enable the installation in same of any and all makes of cutout or switch regardless of the location o f the screw holes or the width or length of the porcelain blocks.
In this specification I will describe the preferred form of the invention, it being understood that the scope of the invention is defined in the appended claims.
In the drawings similar reference characters refer to similar parts in all the views, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional view of a junction box 1n which a cutout or switch block is supported by my device; Fig. 2 is an inverted` plan view of my holder showing how it"1s secured to the block; Fig. 3 is a similar view showing how the holder is secured to a block of another construction; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of my support; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a modified form of my holder; Figs. 6, 7 and 8 are, respectively, a plan view, a longitudinal sectional view on the line 7--7 of Fi 6 7 and an end View, of another modlfied orm of my invention.
By referring to the drawings it will be` seen'that the cutout or switch block 10 Vis secured to aV cabinet- 11 by meansof my holders 12. These holders have a central Web portion 18 connecting the arms or terminals ll and 15,l the planes of which are spaced apart, and are substantially parallel. The /terminal 15 has a longitudinally disposed slot 16 which extends from its outer end 17 to a point Ain close vproximity to the central web portion 13. The terminal 14, which is preferably considerably shorter than the terminal 15, has a similar slot 18 which extends from its outer terminal 19 to a point in close proximity to the central web portion 13. The terminal 15, which is disposed slots 20 which are disposed substantially at right angles to the slot 16. The I inner ends of these slots are spaced from the slot 16 to insure sufiicient strength for the outer ends of the bifurcated terminal 15.
The central web port-ion 13 is bent downwardly from the terminal 15, the Web portion being curved at its lower end to form a foot 21, the web portion then being extended upwardly a short distance where it unites with the terminal 14.
In the modified form of my invention shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, the laterally disposed slots 20 are dispensed with.
In the modified form of my invention shown in Figs. 6, 7 and 8, slots 22 are cut laterally in the web portion 13 to permit of the bending of the web portion more readily, and also to afi'ord greater 'resiliency The outer end 17 of the bifurcated terminal 15 in the said modified form, has a depending flange 23, the slot 16 extending outwardly through the said flange 23, and there being a cut-away portion 24 in the flange 23 which connects with the slot 16 so that when a bolt is disposed in the slot 16, its head or nut may pass through the cutaway portion 24 when the support is moved longitudinally relatively to the bolt.
VVhen my holder is used, the blockrlO is raised away from the surface o-f the cabinet 11, inasmuch as the foot 21 rests against the said surface of the cabinet, and the plane of the bifurcated terminal 15 is a considerable distance from the said foot 21. The longitudinal slots ,16 and 18 permit of lol the longitudinal movement of the cut-out block 10 relatively to the cabinet 11, so that it may be quickly adjusted to the desired position.
. Some forms of blocks are secui'ed by lat- 'eral bolts, and when these forms are used they may be secured to my support by dis-` posing the bolts in the lateral slots 20, and it will be still possible to move the block longitudinally to the desired position, as the longitudinally disposed slots 18 permit of this adjustment. My holder may be constructed at little expense, and when it is used it enables the operator to quickly adjust the cut-out block to the desired position, without the inconvenience and delays which occur when the methods heretofore used are employed.
Having thus deseribed my invention, I claim as new. and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A holder for cut-out blocks having tw arms disposed in different planes, there being ,a central web portion which unites the arms, and a fiange on one of the arms, there being a slot in the arm having the fiange, the slot extending through the fiange.
2. A holder for cut-out blocks having an arm, and a fiange on the arm, there being a slot in the arm which extends through the fiange.
3. A holder for cut-out blocks having an arm, and 'a fiange disposed at right angles to the arm near its terminal, there being a slot in the arm which extends through the fiange.
i 4. A holder for cut-out blocks having two arms disposed in different planes, there beinga central web portion which unites the arms, and a fiange on one of the arms, there being a slot in the arm having the fiange, the slot extending through the fiange and there being` also lateral slots intthe arm having the fiange, the lateral slots not extending to the first-mentioned slot,
5. A holder for cut-out blocks having two arms disposed in different planes, there being a central webl member' which unites the two arms and there being lateral slots in the central web member.
6. A holder for cut-out blocks having two arms disposed in different planes, there being a. central web portion with lateral slots which unites the arms, and a fiange in one of the arms, there being a slot in the arm having the fiange, the slot extending through the fiange.
7. A holder for cut'out blocks' having two arms disposed in different planes, there being va central web portion which unites the arms, there being longitudinal slots in the arms which extend through their free terminals and there being also laterally-extending slots in one of the arms which do not extend to the longitudinal slots therein.
8. A holder for cut-out blocks, having terminals which lie in different planes, there being a central web portion whichunites the terminals, and there being. slots in the 'terminals by which the holdermay be secured to a cabinet and to a cut-out block when the desired adjustment has been dey ERNEST R.
