SAFETY-RAZOR.
To all 'whom 'it vmay concern:
Be it known that I, HENRIE CLAUss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fremont, in the county of Sandusky, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Safety-Razors; and I do declare the follo-wing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to safety razors, and consists in the construction and arrange-ment of parts hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
The object of the invention is to produce a safety razor of simple and inexpensive construction, wherein but a small number of parts are employed, and wherein the arrangement is such as to enable the production of a safety razor which will be effective in the matter of sha-ving, pleasing in appearance, and simple in formation.
The above object is attained by the structure illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of a razor involving my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. l, showing the blade removed and the screw which secures the blade, withdrawn from the head or holdingframe on which the blade is mounted. Fig. 4 is an enlarged end elevation of therazor, the handle being broken away. Fig. 5 is a central vertical section through the blade, the head or razor holding frame, and through a portion of the handle. Fig. 6 is a front elevation, the handle being broken away.
Referring to the characters of reference, l designatesV the handle which may be of any desired shape, and which is preferably formed of a solid piece of metal, provided at its upper end with a reduced threaded portion 2.
The blade holding head or frame is formed preferably of German silver, or other non-corrodible metal, and comprises the forwardly inclined supporting plate 3, the downwardly extending back plate 4 nearly at right angles to the plate 3, and a tongue portion 5 formed integral with and projecting from the lower edge of the back Specification of Letters Patent.

plate 4. The tongue 5 is provided with a central aperture which is tapped to receive the threaded portion 2 of the handle, whereby said parts may be detachably joined, as shown.
It will be noted that the central portion of the plate 3 is depressed, as shown at G, and that from the outer margin of said depressed portion extend a number of guard teeth 7 which curve downwardly to afford a proper bearing against the face when the razor is employed in shaving, and at t-he same time to provide a guard for the edge of the razor to obviate cutting the face, as will be well understood in the art. The marginal end portions 8 of the supporting plate on which the ends of the blade rest, are above the plane of the depressed central portion and the guard teeth 7 so that when a blade is resting upon said plate, it-s cutting edge will stand above the guard teeth, as clearly shown in Figs. and (3, to afford a free passage way for the lather and hair between the blade and guard, preventing an accumulation of hair and lather between the guard and blade sufficient to interfere with the operation of shaving. At the outer edge of each of the end portions 8 is formed a lug 9 which is adapted to engage t-he edge of the blade near the end. These lugs are in proper alinement with the guard and serve to arrest the blade in proper relation therewith, so that when the blade is forced againstsaid lugs and held in such position, it will be correctly positioned to render it operative for shaving.
To hold the blade against longitudinal movement, the end portions 8 are each provided with a projecting stud 10, said studs being such distance apart as to allow the blade to lie lengthwise between them. To secure the blade in place, and at the same time adjust it with respect to the guard, there is employed av screw 1l having a knurled head 12, said screw being threaded in the back plate 4 near the upper edge thereof and caused to pass through said plate at such an angle that the margin of the head 12 will slightly overhang the surface of the. plate 3 at the top, the relative position of said parts being illustrated in Fig. 4, wherein dotted line 13 represents the axis of the screw, dotted line 14 the plane of the back plate 4, and dotted line l5 the plane of the face of the screw. By so placing the screw in the back plate 4 as to cause its head to slightly overhang the surface of the plate 3, the blade 16 when mounted upon said plate and engaged by said screw, is not only forcibly carried against the lugs 9 to aline its edge with respect to the guard, but is also securely held upon said plate by engagement of the overhanging portion of the head of said screw with the rear edge of said blade,
enabling the blade to be rigidly held in posi= tion upon the head or supporting plate by turning the screw so that the head thereon maybe caused to engage the rear edge of said blade. By this arrangement a very thin blade may be used and yet rendered operative for shaving because of the rigidity with which said blade may be held on the head or supporting frame, or if desired a blade of considerable thickness may be used with equal facility.
Because of the fact that the overhanging margin of the head of the screw exerts a downward as well as a forward pressure upon the blade, it is not necessary to hold the blade down upon the end portions of the supporting plate, the lugs l0 being only necessary to position the blade endwise. It will be noted that the lugs 9 are .somewhat hook shaped having rearwardly extending terminal portions which engage slightly over the edge of the blade, as clearly shown in Figs. l and 2, whereby the blade is held down at its edge upon the end portions 8 of the supporting plate and is maintained in unvarying relation'with the guard teeth 7.
Having thus fully set forth my invenj-V tion, what claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A razor comprising a supporting plate and handle, said plate having a guard at its forward edge and al lug at each terminal of said guard, a blade lying upon the plate engaging said lugs with the edge thereof, and a screw having a flanged head which engages the rear edge of the blade, said screw being so mounted as to cause a laterally extending portion of its head to partially overhang the blade surface.
y 2.#A razor comprising a supporting plate and handle, said plate having a marginal guard, stop lugs upon the plate to arrest the blade with respect to said guard, a blade lying upon the plate and engaging said lugs with the edge thereof, and a screw mounted on the supporting plate having a head of relatively large diameter, the head of the screw being adapted to engage the rear edge of the blade, said screw being so positioned as to cause the plane of its engaging face to stand at acute angle with respect to the surface of the blade.
3. A razor comprising a supporting plate and handle, said plate having a marginal guard, a blade lying upon said plate, means for positioning the blade thereon, and a screw having a head of relatively large diameter standing at an acute angle with respectto the surface of the'blade, said screw being movable to carry the inner surface of the head against the rear edge of the blade to overhang the same.
4L. A razor comprising a blade carrying plate having a depressed central portion and blade supporting end surfaces, a guard along the margin of said plate between said end supporting surfaces, stop lugs upon said end surfaces in alinement with said guard, and an adjusting screw having a flanged head engaging the rear edge of said blade at an acute angle with respect to the surface thereof.
