Description

BROKEN BLADE HACK SAW ATTACHMENT Filed July 22, 1946 Patented Aug. 29, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE (Granted under the act of March 3, 1883, as amended April 30, 1928; 370 0. G. 757) 2 Claims.
The invention described herein may be manufactured and used by or for the Government for governmental purposes, without the payment to me of any royalty thereon.
This invention relates to a'novel attachment for association in a hack saw construction of the conventional adjustable type which permits use of a broken hack saw blade therein.
As is well known, the frame of conventional hack saws is adjustable in length to accommodate blades of varying lengths and it is usual to provide holes in the blades, one adjacent each extremity thereof, to receive spaced pins or projections of the frame whereby the blades are removably held in place. It is a common occurrence to have the blades break at some point intermediate these holes in which case the usable remaining part of the blade will obviously have but one hole therein so that it cannot then be held in the frame.
It is accordingly a principal object of this invention to provide an attachment or device adapted to be associated with the broken, holeless end portion of the blade so that the frame may then be adjusted to carry the blade. That is to say, the attachment here to be described is such that the broken blade is provided with this necessary second hole and may be reassembled to the hack saw in operative relation.
This is accomplished by providing a, device which has both a perforated part to supplant the broken end portion of the blade and means whereby the device may be securely attached to the blade. In this way, the broken blades need not be cast away but are fit for continued use.
As will be shown, the attachment is easy to assemble and simple in form so as to be economical to manufacture.
The specific nature of the invention as well as other objects and advantages thereof, will clearly appear from a description of a preferred embodiment as shown in the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a hack saw embodying the novel features of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the attachment of the invention; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
For convenience in description, there is shown in Fig. 1 a hack saw frame F of the conventional adjustable type. There is a pair of angular end members 2 and 4, one of which has its horizontal arm portion receivable in a suitable recess or channel provided in the horizontal part of the other member.
The said arm of one of the parts, such as arm 2 may have spaced notches 6 therein for receiving one or more pins or rivets 8 provided on the other arm or part 4. In other words, the end members 2 and 4 may be moved inwardly or outwardly relative to one another as in a conventional hack saw construction, the relationship of notches 6 and member or members 8 depending upon the length of the particular blade being accommodated.
The lower ends of the leg parts of the frame members 2 and 4 are provided with receivers I2 and M for what will be here called pin-holding, members I6 and is. These latter parts it and 13 preferably take the form of longitudinallyextending, rod-like pieces and one of them, such as l8, will be threaded into a suitably threaded socket provided in a handle member 20.
The inner or adjacent end portions of both the members l6 and I8 have flattened surfaces 22 and 24. A pin 30 extends outwardly from each of these surfaces in slightly opposed or inclined directions and it is these pins 38 which receive the apertured ends of the blade, as will be described.
The pin-holding members [6 and it are movable longitudinally in their receivers as well as being tiltable therein. This capacity of the end members 2 and 4 to both tilt and move longitudinally relative to one another and the ability of the loosely-held rods [6 and I8 to do the same relative to the receivers l2 and 64 supporting the same, together with the fact that the handle is threadedly engaged with member l4, makes it possible to adjust the frame to a blade of the desired size and to readily place an unbroken blade on the pins. Then the handle may be rotated to tighten up the blade for use.
t The device itself will now be described in deail.
There is a substantially fiat plate member 40 which comprises a main body part 42 and an extension part 44. The extension 44 may be at either end of the body part 42 but is preferably more or less of a continuation thereof and in substantially the same plane therewith.
In any event, part 44 is formed to simulate an unbroken end portion of an ordinary hack saw blade B. That is to say, the extension 44 is somewhat elongated with respect to the body part 42 and is so arranged that, when the attachment is associated with the broken end of the blade in a manner to be explained, it will be substantially a continuation of that blade and supplant the broken end portion 50 that the blade may be assembled in the hack saw.
In all cases, the extension part 44 is provided with a hole 46 therethrough which, when the blade B and the attachment of the invention are in assembled relatiomawill be: longitudinally alignedwith thausual hole foundiin'the;
unbroken end portion of the blade, as shown in Fig. 1. As Will be obvious, the assembled blade and attachment may be so disposed relative to the frame that the broken endof the bladeis.
at either end of the frame since the holeAE may, receive either of the pins 30.
The body part 42 of the plate; membfe1ir49:zis.
provided with a cut or slot 48 which is preferably in the shape of an inverted U and the portion- 50 of the material within this cutzis adapted to. be bent outwardly from the plane of thiebody:
part along the line of its connection therewith toeform a-,l-1ip; Thus the cuteout portion 50-.-when I bent as stated, provides an upwardly-directed;-
vl-shaped groove: in cooperation with. the. other coplanar parts-of I the body, which ,g-roove, as will appear, acts; as -a seat-for. the broken end.-p ortion, of-the sbl-ade B-z with:- which it is assembled; On the upper side'of: the body l-i of the plate memberrisf-a ledge-likeaportion 52 whichaextends at an 1 angle thereto and at-a distance above the upper; marginal-edge of the inverted L -shaped slot: The ledge? portion: 52 is provided-with-a threaded opening 56 therethro-ughangularl 012 parallel: to the-plane of. body part. 42.. and is adapted; to, receive a screwmember. 55 which is.
arranged .tolhave its lower. end engagethe broken blade withiwhich the attachmentis associated.
Thus. the device maybe securelyattached-to. the
part andan extension partat: one end; thereof; said bodypart' bein'g'provided'with an inverted U-shaped out therein and the portion within the out being bent outwardly from the plane of said body part to form a V-shaped groove for supporting the broken end of a hack saw blade, said extension part formed to the shape of an unbroken end of a hack saw blade and provided w-ith=ansopening therethroligh; a ledge-like portlon extending: outwardly. from said. body part above and in the same direction as said bent portion, said ledge-like portion being provided with a screw-threaded opening therethrough, and a SoreW-threadedmember movable in said openingandadapted to engage the hack saw blade whereby the portion of the blade disposed in said v shapedgroove may be releasably held in place.
2. As., a. new article of manufacture, an attachment to supplant the broken end portion of a broken:hackizsawblade comprising, a substantiallyv fl'atplatev member provided with an opening therethrough adjacent one end thereof, a cutoutportionavhich is merit-outwardly; from the planeoLsaidplatenaemberto provide a V -shapedgroove, a ledg e-l-ike; ,por.tion extending -cutwardly.
from said plate member, above andparallelto the'line ofintersectionof,saidplate member and. said anguiarly, extending, cutout portion, saidledgeelike.. portion. bein provided with a .screwthreaded member movable in .a threaded opening in saidledgeportion, .theaxis of said opening e2:-
tendingat an angleto the planeoi said, plate member and, adaptedto engegethehack saw bladewhereby. the. portion. of the blade disposed in.saidv-shapedvgroove-may be releasably held in .an unipl'anar position.
