FOLDING UMBRELLA 0R PARASOL.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. DANmLs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Umbrellas or Parasols, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to construct an umbrella or parasol in which the handle and. tip may be detached from the main rod, and the frame carrying the covering may be removed intact from the main rod.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved umbrella in its open position. Fig. 2 is a lengthwise sectional view. Fig. 3 is a top view of the sleeve 2 with its flange 3. Fig. 4 is. an elevation of the lower end of the tip. Fig. 5 is a vertical section of the upper portion of the sleeve. Fig. 6 is a vertical section o-f the notch 11. Fig. 7 is a vertical section through the handle connection.
The main rod 1 is about equal to the length of the ribs, and has a sleeve 2 connected to its upper portion, which has a stop flange 3 formed integral therewith, and which has a central opening 4 formed with a side slot 5. The sleeve surrounds the rod, and projects beyond the end thereof, forming a socket, as shown. The main rod 1 has two spring catches 6 and 7. A handle 8 is detachably connected to the lower end of the main rod by the catch 9 engaging an opening 10 in the handle.
The frame comprises the notch 11, to which are pivotally connected the ribs 12. This notch 11 is formed with an annular groove 13 within -which the covering 14 forming the top is secured. A Vseat 15 is formed in the lower edge of the notch. A runner 16 is fitted to slide over the catches G, 7 and 9, and to it is connected the spreaders 17. The other ends of these spreaders are pivotally connected to theribs 12. The covering is connected to the ends of the ribs in the usual manner. A tip 18 supports a spring catch 19 which is adapted to enter the socket or upper end of the sleeve 2, and snaps into the slot 5, thereby uniting the tip Specification of Letters Patent.

to the main rod. A projection 20, entering the seat 15, serves to hold the notch 11. By detaehing the tip 18 and the handle 8, the length of the main rod is reduced to the length of the bows which is small so as to be carried in a grip.
In 'opening the umbrella, the runner 16 will come in contact with the lower end of the tubular portion 2.
I claim as my invention 1. In an umbrella, the combination with a rod, of a sleeve fixed to the rod and projecting beyond the same, forming a socket, said sleeve having an outstanding flange, a notch mounted on the sleeve and abutting against the inner side of the flange, ribs pivoted to the notch, a tip having its inner end fitting in the socket, said tip having an annular shoulder abutting against the outer side of the flange, and a latch located within thentip and detachably engaging the iange t0 maintain said tip in place.
2. In an umbrella, the combination with a rod, of a sleeve fixed thereon, a notch detachably mounted on the outer end of the sleeve, ribs pivoted to the notch, a runner slidable on the rod and abutting against the inner end of the sleeve to limitits outward movement, and spreaders pivoted to the runner and to the ribs.
3. In an umbrella, the combination with a rod, of a sleeve fixed to and projecting beyond the outer end of the rod, said sleeve having an outstanding stop flange, a notch surrounding the sleeve and abutting against the flange, a catch for holding the notch in place, ribs pivoted to the notch, a runner slidable upon the rod and abutting against the inner end of the sleeve to limit its outward movement, spreaders connecting the runner and ribs, a detachable tip that fits within the sleeve, and a catch carried by the tip and detachably engaging t-he sleeve to maintain the tip in position.
