To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GUsTAvn VANDESANDE VAN ROY, a citizen of the Kingdom of Belgium, residing at Bulevard du Midi 97, Brussels, Belgium, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Runners for Umbrellas and the Like and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The invention relates to improvements in runners for umbrellas and the like;

The object of my invention is to provide a runner which will protect the cloth of the umbrella. from wear against the stays when the umbrella is closed and which will be simple, eflicient, and more sightly than the runners heretofore known to me.

I/Vith this general object in view, and some others which will be obvious to those skilled in the art from the description hereinafter, my invention consists in the features, details of construction, and combination of parts, which will first be described in connection with the accompanying drawings and then particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view, partly in elevation, showing the runner in the position it occupies when the umbrella is closed; Fig. 2, a similar view showing the runner in the position it occupies when the umbrella is open, and Fig. 3 a plan view of the runner. Fig. 4 is a view in elevation, partly in section, exhibiting the position of the attachment when the umbrella is raised.

The combined runner b and notch b, which constitute one of the features of the present application, is, inclosed in a cylindrical or tubular slide a, which slides over it. The runner b is provided with two flanges that are adapted to engage with the inner walls of the slide a, and thereby effect accurate sliding movement of the latter relatively to the former, thus to insure proper operation of the device under all conditions of use. The motion of the slide relative to the runner is limited by the two extremities being turned in, as indicated at a a to constitute terminal stops. The cylindrical slide a is a little larger in diameter than the handle 0 of the umbrella, ornaments it, and covers the joint when it is closed.

When the umbrella is closed, Fig. 1, the

cylindrical slide a holds the extremities of the frame-braces, while when opening the urnbrella the slide a is operated in such a manner as to liberate the said braces, Fig. 2. In opening the umbrella the braces take a comparatively angular position to the stick (1. They effect a leverage on the edge a of the cylindrical slide a and cause the notch b of the runner to come out of the slide as far as necessary.

What I claim is 1. The combination, with a runner arranged to slide on the umbrella-stick and provided with means for engagement with the umbrella-braces, of a slide mclosing the runner and having terminal stops to limit its movement relative to said runner.

2. The combination, with a runner arranged to slide on the umbrella-stick and provided with a notch for attachment to the umbrella-braces, of a tubular slide inclosing the runner and axially movable relative thereto, and provided at its terminals with means for limiting said movement.

3. The combination, with a runner, arranged to slide on the umbrella-stick and provided with a notch for the attachment of the umbrella-braces, of a tubular slide arranged to admit the upper end of the umbrella-handle thus to conceal the point of juncture between the stick and handle said slide being axially movable relative to the runner, and means for limiting the said movement.

4. As a new article of manufacture, an attachment for umbrellas comprising a sleeve provided with terminal stops, and a combined notch and runner housed thereby and movable relatively thereto.
