Beit known that I, HENRY Gr. VoIGH'r, a citizen of the United States, residing atNew Britain, county ot' Hartford, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the y following -is a full, clear, vand exactv descrip- Achambermaid on a single lfioor, a grandmaster key .for the use of the housekeeper and adapted to 0 erat'e the locks on all floors, and a so-ca led emergency or proprietowrs key by which access may be gained to all rooms under all circumstancesand by .which the lock may be so set 'that it cannot be'operated by any but the emergency key. It is also connnon-practice to provide such locks with mechanlsmsuch as the thumb turn yoperable from the inner side, by which the latch bolt may be dead-locked against any key but the emergency key.

The free end of said guard tumbler is also slotted at 37 to receive4 a lug 38 on the rear end of the .dead-locking slide` when said ltumbler is vin its `elevs'itfd position.
vWhen the dead-locking slide is in its rearinost or normal inoperative posit-ion, Fig. 1, the lug 38 thereof lies to the rear of and outside of the slot 37, so that said guard tumbler may be rocked regardless of said lug. The rotary cam arm 28 lies in the same plane as the guard tumbler 34, and hence as said cam arm is rotated, together with the rotary Cam arm 29, by the guest key,- the tumbler will be rocked downwardly against its spring so that as the dead-locking slide 1 2 moves forward to operative position, the lug '38 on said slide, instead of taking within the slot 37 of the guard tumbler, will ride over the upper edge of said tumbler, as indicated in Fig. 3, thus permitting the rotary cam arm 28 tofmake a complete rotation and to return to its normal position, in which the key may be withdrawn from the cylinder lock. 1Vlien, however, the dead-locking slide is operated by means of the emergenc key, the rotary cani arm 28 is not rotate and hence as the, dead-locking slide moves forward to operative position, the guard tumbler 34 remains in its elevated or normal position, in which position the lug 38 of thel locking slide passes within the slot; 37 of said tumbler. Consequently, if. it is now attemptedto return the locking slide to normal position by means of the guest key, the rot-ary cam arm 28, operated 'by said key, will come into engagementwith the upper edge of thev guard tumbler, thus rigidly held inv its elevated position, whereby complete rotation of the cam arm 28 and I"consequently also of the cam arm 29 by the guest key will be prevented. Hence` -when said locking slide is moved to 'dead-locking position by the emergency key, it cannot be returned to normal position by the guest key.
Inorder that the latch bolt may be deadlocked against operation by the master and grand-master keys from the inside, a thumbturn 35 is provided on the inner Side of the j lock having a spindle which engages the hub 35 of roll-back arms 36, which overlie the lower arm 25vof the tumbler 24 'and are adapted to operate the same, and thereby actuate the deadflocking slide towhich saidV` tumbler is pivoted toZand from operative posit-ion. To this end, the lower arm 25 of the tumbler 24- is provided with a laterally projecting ledge 37, Fig. 7, which terminates in a depression 38, having the actuat ing surfaces 39 and 40 adapted to b e enf gaged' by the thumb-turn rol-l-back'arlns 36,

In order that the dead-locking slide may be returned from operative to normal positionby means-of, one of the'duplieate guest keys after it has been moved to deadlocking position by means of the thumbturn roll-back, it is necessary that the guard tumbler 34v be moved to and held in depressed position during suoli movement of the dead-locking slide to operative position by said roll-back, so that the cam arm 28 rotated by the guest key may rotate free of the guard tumbler. To this'end the guard tumbler vis provided with a lateral projection 41 arranged in the path of rotation of the thumb-turn roll-back arms 3G, whereby as said arms rotate, the guard tumbler will be drawn downuntil during the forward movement ofthe dead-locking slide, the lug 38 wi-ll pass over the upper edge of said tumbler, thus holding said tumbler in allposit'ioii to permit free operation of the rotary camarm 28 as before described when it is desired to return the dead-lookin mechanism to inoperative or normal position by .mea-ns. of 1 the guest key. It. will be seen, therefore, that" the dead-l locking device may be moved by the guest keyl emergency key and thumb-turn to 4operyative position so that the latch operating levers 14 and 18 are carried entirely out of range of the cylinder plug cam 21; that when the latch is so dead-locked bythe thumb-turn it may be released therefrom` by a'duplicate guest,key as well as by the emergency key, and' when the llatch is deadlocked by eithertlie guest key orthe emergency key, it may be released therefrom by the thumb-turn and finally when the latch is dead-locked by .the emergency key it cari only be releasedtherefrom fromthe outside bythe emergency key, but it canalso be released therefrom from the inside by` the l .thumb-turn.
