E. F. PONATH. MOTOR DRIVEN HAIR CLIPPER.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 13, 1910.

MUIOBf-DBIVEN HLIR-CLIPPER.
Speeicntlon o! Letters Patent.
Patented (let. 25, .1910.
Application filed January 13, 1910. Serial No. 537,888.
' vide a clipper having a reciprocating b ade so arranged as to be operated by a worin mechanism and havill adfusting means by which the tension of t 1e b ade can be regulated and the entire clipper easily and rendily manipulanted, and its movement. 1governed by a flexible connection.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention with u part of the sleeve or handle in section, showing the {lexible shaft connection with the worin mechanism. Fig. 2 is a central sectional view of the clippermechanisin. Fig. 3 is a top plan `View with the housing removed. Fig. it is s detail perspective view of the rocking lever. Fig. 5 1s a detail sectional View of the worm shaft and its journal connection. Fig. is Il. detail perspective View of the cum made use o f in voperating the rocking lever. Fig. 7 is a side view of the clip er, the flexible shaft and motor by whici the same is driven.
`In the. construction of my invention .l
` provide a frame 8 connected to :i stationary guide cutter'blade 9, the front end of said lade provided with serrations 10 of any suitable size so as to. regulate the length of the c utdesired.
Inthe blade 9 is provided a screw-threade-drbore 11 in which is inserted a post 12, the npper end of seid post provided with screwthreads 13 on which is mounted a, nut 14. Over the post is placed a housing 15, the
thereof bein suitably shaped andeurved so 'as to provi( e a neat appearance, :md its'undcr edge 1G nrran ed to come in contact with the up r sur ace of the reciprocating blade 17. he front cutting surface of this blade is ulso'provided .with serrations 18 to correspond with those of the stationarl blade. The said blade 17 is provided .vfvit n pa'ir of elongated slots l!) which fit over lugs 2() formed on the stutionary blude and uct :is guides to limit the reciprocatory movement.
In the reciprocating blade und between the two elongated slots is n recess 21 in which. is sented n downwardly projectinpr tooth 22 of the rocking lever 23. The suid lever is provided. with uu integral sleeve 211 which snugly tits over the post l2 und. the bottom end of Suid sleeve is so urrnngod :is to Contact with the fruinc H und uct. :is n bearing so :is to prevent the tooth 22 from extending too for dowmvnrdly und contacting with the stutioiniry blude i). The snid lever 23 is also provided with u bifurcntrnl arm 24. This urm boing so bent. ns to be parallel with the traine S, und in the bifurcation of seid arm operates a com 25. The said cam is supported on a trunnion 2G which extends through the frame. and has bearing in a detachable cnsing27. On the trunnion 26 is mounted n worin geur 28 which meshes with :i worm 29, mounted on a shaft 30, the
forward end of said shnfthaving a bearingt in u downwardly projecting lug 31 forming a part of the casing 27, and the greater portion of the shaft 30 having bearing in n screw-threaded journal box 32 which projects outwardly from the casing` 27, und on the end of said shaft 30 is formed a key 33.
The bottom end 34: of the trunnion 2G hns :i bearing in the. frame 8 so ns to provide rigidity to `the revolving cani 25. The cssing 27 is held in position against the frame 8 by means of the screws 35.
ln order to provide for the roper adjustment of the reci rocsting bla e 17 Athe housing 15 is provieiied with a horizontal upper portion 36 and between the inner surface thereof and the top of the sleeve 24 is sufforced downwardly b means of the nut 14, so that the bottom e ge 16 of said housing may be brought in contact with the upper portion of the reci rocating blade, thus holdmg the same/in c ose contact with thc stutionary blade.
- Over the projecting journal bearing 32 is preferably placed a sleeve or handle 37. In vthis handle is inserted the flexible shaft 38. its contacting end provided with :i socket 39 in which the key 33 ofthe shaft 30 is inserted, und' held in position so that the worin mechanism can be rapidlyrotated by the opveration of the motor 40 to which the opposite l end of the flexible shaft is connected.
fcient space to permit the housing to be In the drawings I show the frame projectin at an angle from the stationary blade. I do not desire to limit myself to this 'precise construction as the frame may be on a horizontal plane with the stationary blade, this being entirely dependent upon the arrange` lment of the'clippers for the use to which it is adapted.
y The4 :se: `l feature of my invention is the mammlation 'of a reciprocating blade by a worm mechanism driven by a flexible shaft.
The o eration of my invention is as follows. he 'device is first laced in osition upon the flexible shaft by inserting t e handle 37 over the shaft, ermittin the key 33 to seat itself inthe socget 39. s the motor 40 is (placed in operation the shaft 30 is revolve and its worm 29, which meshes with the worm gear 28, is placed in o ration and the cam 25, which is so arrange as to operate in the vbifurcation of the rocking lever 23, locks the same and the tooth 22 of the rocking lever, Whichis seated in the elongated slot of the rcciprocatinfr cutter blade, will rapidly reciprocate the blide. When it is desired to provide more tension upon the reciprocating blade, the operator by mani ulatlng the ,thumb-nut 14 will cause `t e hous' 15' topress downwardly and contact with t e 'upper surface ofv the reciprocating bladeL This feature has Aa tendency to create more closel more friction against the contacting surface ofthe blades and bring the cutting edges togither. -Having lly described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to have secured to me by the grant of Letters latent, is:
A motor-driven hair clip cr comprising a stationary guide cutter 'ladeg a :frame mounted on the cutter blade and. diverging therefrom on an angle; a post sup sorted in the frame und stationary cutter ilade; a casing secured to the frame; a trunnion mounted inthe casing and frame; Aa worm gear mounted on the trunnion; a cam formed' on the trunnion and located beneath the worm gear; a worm supported in the casing and meshing with the Worm gear; a bifurcated arm plvotall'y mounted on the post, :its one end contacting with the cam and o erated thereby; a reciprocating cutter b ade mounted on the stationary cutter blade and provided with a recess. in which one end ofv the bifurcated arm contacts for operating the reciprocating blade by the movement of theV cam; a housing Supported on the -post and contacting with the reciprocating blade;
and a set nut located oli-the post above the housing so as to regulate the tension ofl the efiprocating blade, substantially as speci In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in presence of two -subscribing witnesses.
