Be it known that l, WVILLIAM EDGAR his RANT, a citizen. of'the United States residing at Tampa, county of Hillshoro, and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ll/[p Attachments, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to attachments for mops and particularly to devices for spreading the cloth of the mop.

The object of my invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive attachment for a mop which will effectually spread the cloth portion thereof and maintain a broad niopping surface for engagement with the floor.

A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the class mentioned pan tioularly adapted for use upon that class of mops which are provided with wringer attachments, as in mops of this class the cloth portion is usually drawn out until very narrow and the sides curled up so that only formed of a wire frame terminating at the end in a loop in which the mop cloth is secured, and sometimes a small metal plate is provided for holding portions of the wire frame in position.

In carrying out my invention I provide a metal plate having one end reduced in Width to fit Within. the clothholding loop at the end of the mop head. The plate is adaptedtobe arranged between the mop head and the cloth to maintain the latter in spread condition and is provided with means for securing the plate to the head and if preferred may be recessed to receive portions of the head, particularly the small metal plate above mentioned when the hoop is rovided with the same.

Rs mop heads vary in size and construction, the attachment forming the subject of this application may be varied in size and apertured as necessary to suit the particular mop upon which it is to be used, without departing' from the spirit of my invention.

My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in .Wl'llCll Figure 1 is a side elevation of a mop of the class under consideration equipped with an attachment embodying" my invention in its preferred. form, Fig. 2 is a detail plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the attachmentremoved from the mop. 1

Referring now to the drawings 1 indicates the handle of a mop and 2 the head thereof, the latter consisting of a wire frame com prising the diverging arms 3, the end loop 4. andn small plate 5 rigidly cormecting the ends of the arms 3 and affording means for connecting the handle to the head. Upon the handle is arranged the wringing attachment comprising a rotatably mounted loop 6 to receive one end of the mop cloth 7, the opposite end of which is secured in the loop are operating crank 8 and suitable connection 9 between said crank and the loop 6. The portion of the mop above described is of well known form and I lay no claim. to the same.

My invention comprises a broad elongated plate 10 adapted to be arranged between the head 2 of a mop and the cloth 7. One end of the plate 10 is reduced in width as at 11 to fit within the loop 4. I prefer to taper the end 11 as illustrated clearly in Figs. 2 and 3 in order that a better fit may be secured between the mop head loop 4 and thewardly over the plate'as at 15 forming s;

V This s particution it is tobe understood that the same may be used upon mops of substantially any construction and that the sizes and proportions may be varied to suit the various styles of mops without departing from the spirit of my invention.

The device is of simple construction, and may be manufactured at a very low cost. Further it may be readily applied to the mop and will maintain the cloth 7 in position to give wide beating surface whereby the Work may be accomplished more quickly and more eifectually than is possible without the use of the attachment.

Having flSCllbQCl. my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

l. A mop attachment comprising a metal plate adapted to be arranged between a mop head having a cloth holding loop and the cloth of the mop, and means for attaching said plate to the mop head, substantially as described.

2. A mop attachment comprising a metal plate adapted to be arranged between a mop head having a cloth holding loop and the cloth of the mop, one end of said plate being tapered to fit within the loop of the mop head, substantially as described.

3. Am'op attachment comprising a metal plate adapted to be arranged between a mop head having a cloth holding loop and the cloth of the mop, one end of said plate be ing tapered to fit within the loop of the mop head, and spring tongues on said plate for engagingportions of the mop head, substantially as described.

4. A mop attachment comprising a metal plate adapted to be arranged between a mop head having a cloth holding loop and the cloth of the mop, and means for wcuring said plate to said head and said plate-being apertured to receive port-ions of the mop head, substantially as described.

5. As an article of manufacture, a mop attachment comprising a flat metal plate adapted to be arranged between a mop head and the cloth'of the mop, said plate being tapered at one end, spring tongues extending upwardly from one face of said plate and the end opposite said tapered end being bent upwardly to .torm a wellrounded edge, substantially as described.
