HEMMER-GUIDE.

To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, Vrcron H. CANHAM, a subject of the King of England, residing at Guelph, in the Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hemmer- Guides, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to hemmer guides. It is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is an elevation of a skirt showing the guide in position; Fig. 2, an eleva tion ofthe guide set at five inches; Fig. 3, a plan of the guide; Fig. 4E, anelevation of the guide collapsed; Fig. 5, a section at 55 011 Fig. 2; Fig. 6, a detail section through the guide bar and skirt.

The base preferably consists of the bar A with the offset A and the weight A on the end of such off-set.
B is the guide bar connected with the gage bar B by the upwardly curved loop B The gage bar is provided with the rulings B to indicate the height of the guide bar B. The bar A and the gage bar are connected by two lazy-tong bars C and C C is, pivoted to the weighted slide C which travels on the base bar A and is adapted to be locked in any desired position by the thumb screw C At its other end the bar 0 is pivoted at C to the opposite end of the gage bar. The two bars G and C are pivoted together at C The bar C is pivoted at C to one end of the base bar and pivoted at its other end at C to the sliding indicator C on the gage bar.
I wish my drawings to be taken as diagrammatic and while it illustrates an actual apparatus, it is intended to be merely illustrative of one form of structure wherein my invention is utilized. The proportion of the parts is such that the gage bar lies between the off-set A and the weighted slide 0 when the structure is collapsed.
The use and operation of my invention are as follows: When a skirt is to be fitted with reference to its distance from the ground, the wearer stands at a fixed point with the hemmer guide just inside the lower margin of the skirt. Having previously determined the distance which the skirt is to hang from the ground, the thumb-screw C is loosened and the indicator slide on the gage bar is moved to that ruling which indicates the proper distance from the ground. In the case shown, it is the ruling five. That signifies that the skirt is to hang five inches from the ground. The dressmaker now turns the lower edge of the skirt upwardly and inwardly over the guide bar, which guide bar is curved in substantially an arc of the circle formed by the lower edge of the dress and is just five inches from the ground along its entire lower edge. The goods of the skirt is adjustable about this guide bar and then marked or stitched or bent in position. The wearer of the skirt turns and the operation is continued as indicated in Fig. 1 until the lower edge of the skirt has been established at the right distance from the ground.
Then the hemmer guide is to be packed up for transportation which is a matter of great importance because dressmakers are accustomed to carry these devices about with them, the thumb-screw C is loosened, the lazy-tong is entirely collapsed and the parts brought to the position shown in full lines, where they lie almost entirely in a single plane and can be put into a small flat box.
I claim:
1. A hemmer guide comprising a base, a horizontally disposed hemmer guide bar and a folding collapsible connection between them.
2. A hemmer guide con'iprising a base, a horizontally disposed hemmer guide bar and a folding collapsible connection between them, consisting of a lazy-tong structure.
3. A hemmer guide comprising a base, a horizontally disposed hemmer guide bar, a horizontally disposed gage bar and a folding collapsible connection between the base and the two bars.
4. A hemmer guide comprising a base, a horizontally disposed hemmer guide, a horizontally disposed gage bar, and a folding collapsible connection between the base and the two bars, said two bars connected by an upwardly turned loop.
5. A hemmer guide comprising a base, a horizontally disposed hemmer guide bar, a horizontally disposed gage bar, and a collapsible connection between the base and the two bars, said connection consisting of a lazy-tong structure.
6. A hemmer guide comprising a base extended in a horizontal plane with a weight at one extremity, a guide bar, and a folding collapsible connection between the guide bar and the base.
7. A hemmer guide comprising a base extended in a horizontal plane with a weight at one extremity, a hemmer guide bar, and a collapsible connection between the guide bar and the base, such collapsible connection consisting of a lazy-tong structure.
8. A hemmer guide containing a base with a base bar, and a sliding weight thereon, a gage bar and a guide bar connected together, a sliding indicator on the gage bar, and a collapsible connection between the base and the guide and gage bars.
9. A hemmer guide containing a base with a base bar, and a sliding weight thereon, a gage bar and a guide bar connected together, a sliding indicator on the gage bar, and a collapsible connection between the base and the guide and gage bars consisting of two bars pivoted one to the gage bar and the V sliding weight on the base bar, the other to the base bar and the sliding indicator on the gage bar.
10. A henimer uide comprising a base consisting of two bars at an angle to each other, one provided with a fixed weight at its outer end, the other with a sliding weight, a gage and a guide bar connected together and mounted above the base, and a collapsible connection between the two and the base.
11. A hennner guide having a base, a weight at one end of said base, an arm at right angles to said base and a weight at the end of said arm, a gage bar and a guide bar connected one with the other, and a folding collapsible device connecting said gage bar and said base.
12. A hemmer guide having a base, a weight at one end of said base, an arm at right angles to said base, a weight at the end 01 said arm, a gage bar and a guide bar con nected one with the other and a folding collapsible device connecting said gage bar and said base, one of said weights movable responsive to the adjustment of the connecting device.
