l. REMY.
SKIRT MEASURE. APPLICATION HLED fB.23.19x8.

61H01' mui JEANNE REMY, OF 4NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
SKIRT-MEASURE.
Specieation of Letters Patent.
Patented Jamai,- 1919.
Application led February 23, 1918. Serial No. 218,849.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEANNE REMY, a citi- Zen of France,^residing at New Orleans, in the county of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Skirt-Measures, of which the following is a specification. v
This invention relates to a measuring device which may be advantageously employed by dress makers and other persons in obtain-` ing the length of wearing apparel, particularly skirts.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive measure of this character which is so constructed that it may not only be employed to obtain the waist and hip measure of a skirt but also may be advantageously used to obtain the proper length of the skirt at various points, so that the skirt when worn will, hang evenly.
Another object of the invention is to provide slides of novel construction by means 0f which a plurality of adjustable measuring tapes are adjustably connected with a waist band.
A further obj ect of the invention is to provide a measuring device with a waist band which may be quickly applied and adjusted about the waist and is so constructed that the skirt may be firmly held at the waist by the band while the wearer of the skirt employs the measuring tape to determine the length of the skirt.
With these and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a skirt measure constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view in side elevation of a portion of the waist band.
Like characters of reference denote the4 in one edge thereof spacedl notches 6l in which may be arranged the bill ofva hookS at one end of the strip to hold the strip .in band formation as shown in Fig. 1 inthe drawing.
The graduated strip which isintended to be employed in obtaining the waist and hip measure of a skirt is passed through a plurality of slides which are preferably 4 in number and indicated in the drawing by the numerals 9, 10, 11, and 12.
Each of the slides which are movable longitudinally of the strip comprising the waist band 5 is formed from a strip of material which is bent to form a rectangularly shaped body portion 13, one side wall of which is bent to present to the outer face of the band 5 a convexed surface 111 by means of which the slide may be held in adjusted position upon the band.
The body 13 has formed in one end wall thereof a pair of spaced slits 15 through which passes a reduced extension 16 at one end of the strip from which the body 13 is formed. The extension terminates in an elliptical shaped head 17 which is bent to overlie the slits 15. and has formed therein a longitudinally extending slot 18.
A weighted measuring tape 19 which may be employed to determine the length of the skirt at a predetermined point, so that the skirt will hang evenly when worn', is passed adjacent its upper end through the slot 18 and has its upper end connected with a slide 20 on the tape and by means of which the tape may be lengthened or shortened.
When it is desired to employ the measure to insure a skirt being of the proper length to hang evenly when worn, the strip from which the waist band is formed is adjusted about the waist. The slides 9 and 10 are now moved longitudinally of the band until they occupy a position at the front and back thereof after which, the slides 11 and 12 are adjusted on the band until they are above the hips. The tapes 19 are now adjusted by means of the slides 20 until the weights at the lower ends of the tape touch the floor. The top of the skirt may now be adjusted to the required height above the top of the waist band 5 at various points until the bottom of the skirt is spaced an even distance from the fioor at all points.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it is apparent that an inexpensive skirt thereof, a hook at one' end of said band and adapted to extend Within said notches, and
10 a plurality of measuring tapes slidably and connected Wit-li `said-loand-V strip-having knu niloerof graduations and val plurality lof spaced notches in one ledge thereof, .o hook at one ond of Seid Strip 'adapted' toloxtond Within- Said notches, o
through which said Vs1-,rip
is passed, and a Weighted measuring tape adjustably connected with each of said slides.
3. In a device of the class described, a tape carrying slide formed from a strip of material bent to a rectangularly shaped 4slide body having an outwardly curved side Wall and a pair of spaced slits in one end `Wall thereof,an extension at one end of said strip from which said body is formed passed through said slits, and ahead at one ond of Said oXtonSon, bont to ovollo ,Seid slits and having a longitudinally extended slot therein. i
In testimony whereof I ,oX my Signatur@- JEANNE REMY gpien et this patent may be :obtained for live cents each, by addressing the G emmissiolier of Patente, '1, 'iff if. Y @y f
