FLORINDO LUCGIONI, or nNIoN'roWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINATION RULE, SQUARE, AND coivirassns.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 23, 1914.
Application filed October 21, 1912. Serial No. 727,042.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, FLoRINno LUCCIONI, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at tfniontowu, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Rules, Squares, and Compasses, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawwas.
his invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in measuring instruments and relates more particularly to a combination rule, square and compass.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature which shall be of very simple construction and which may be easily adjusted.
Another object is to provide a device wherein a compass arm is connected by means of pivoted links to one arm of a square, said compass arm being slidably movable along the other arm of the square.
The invention also aims to generally improve devices of this nature, to render them more useful and commercially desirable, and to provide an instrument which may be quickly folded into a convenient shape for handling.
lVith these and other objects in view as shall become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combi nation and ai-angement of parts as I shall herein fully describe and claim.
For a complete understanding of my in vention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a plan view of a form wherein the arms of the square are pivotally connected to each other and Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the device in its folded position.
In the present form of my invention, I
have illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, the numeral 2 indicating the long arm, which pivotally connected by means of the rivet 11 to the short arm 1. A stop lug 12 is formed upon one side of the arm 1 adjacent the inner edge thereof and serves to limit the movement of the arm 2 in one direction, said arm being provided on one edge with a notch 13 to receive the lug when the device is folded. lVhen the unnotched edge of the arm 2 is in contact with the lug 12 a right angle is formed between said arm and the short arm 1. The advantage of the device lies in the fact that the same can be folded into a very compact form, as illustrated in Fig. 2, by disengaging the arm 2 from the arm 4, swinging said first mentioned arm over the arm 1 and then swinging the hinged connection 8 so as to bring the short arm of the square and the compass arm together.
It will be seen from the foregoing description that my device provides an excellent con'ipass which may be readily adjusted by loosening the set screw 6 and sliding the arm l along the arm 2. hen it is desiredto use my invention as a square, the arm 2 is removed from the loop 5 and the arm 1 is turned about so as to swing the other arm of the square away from engagevment with the compass arm 4:.
Laterally projecting spurs 1% are formed on the arms 1 and 4 and are useful in measuring the caliber of a pipe.
it is to be understood that, while I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to be limited to this exact structure and arrange ment of parts, but may make such changes as shall fall within the scope and spirit of the invention.
"What- I claim is:-
1. A device of the class described comprising a pair of parallel arms, each of said arms being tapered at one end, a guide loop formed upon one end of the arms adjacentthe tapered end thereof, a third arm pivotally connected at one end to the other of said first mentioned arms adjacent the tapered end thereof, means carried by said guide loop for clamping engagement with said third arm and a hinged connecting member pivotally connected at its ends to said first mentioned arms.
2. A device of the character described comprising a pair of parallel bars, each of said bars being tapered at one end, a transverse guide loop formed upon one of said bars adjacent the tapered end thereof, a third bar pivotally connected at one end to the other of said first mentioned bars adjacent the tapered end thereof, means carried by said guide loop for clamping engagement with the third mentioned bar, ahinged connecting member pivotally secured at its ends to said first mentioned bars, a stop lug formed upon one of said first mentioned bars and adapted to limit the movement of the third mentioned bar, and laterally projecting spur members formed upon the outer edges of the first mentioned bars.
3. A folding device of the character described comprising a pair of graduated arms pivotally connected at one end and adapted to be arranged in parallel relation when said device is in a folded position, said arms being further adapted to be disposed in position at right angles to each other, means carried by one of said arms for limiting the outward movement of the other of said arms, a compass arm adjustably mounted upon one of said arms and arranged in parallel relation with the other arm, and means for connecting said compass arm to the first mentioned arm for relative movement.
a. A folding device of the character described comprising a pair of graduated arms pivotally connected together at one end and adapted to be arranged in parallel relation when said device is in a folded position, said arms being further adapted to be disposed in a position at right angles to each other, a stop lug carried by one of said arms and adapted to be engaged by the other arm to limit the outward swinging movement of the latter arm, said latter arm having a recess to receive said lug when the arms are in a folded position, a compass arm adjustably mounted upon one of said arms and arranged in spaced parallel relation with the other arm, and means for con necting said compass arm to the arm carrying the stop lug for relative movement.
A folding device of the character de scribed comprising a pair of graduated arms pivotally connected together at one end and adapted to be arranged in parallel relation when said device is in a folded position, said arms being further adapted to be disposed in a position at right angles to each other, a stop lug carried by one of said arms and adapted to be engaged by the other arm to limit the outward swinging movementthereot', said latter arm being provided with a recess to receive said lug when the device is in its folded position, a compass arm adj ustably mounted upon one of said arms and arranged in spaced parallel relation with the other arm, means for connecting said compass arm to the first mentioned arm for relative movement, a tapering projection formed at the pivoted end of the last mentioned arm and a second tapering projection formed on the end of the compass arm at its adjustable connection and adapted to cooperate with the first projection.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
