COMBINATION-TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. s, 1918.
Application-filed February 9, 1918, Serial No. 216,150.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown thELt I,"ALEXANDER OZERO- wrcz, a citizen of Russia, residing at Hamtramck, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain'new and useful Improvement in Combination-Tools, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a combination tool, especially designed for carpentersuse, but which may be used by others to advantage, as shown in the accompanying drawings and more particularly set forth in the following specification and claims.
The object of my invention is to combine in a single device several essential carpenter and other mechanics tools which are adapted to be folded into a compact form convenient for carrying in the pocket.
The device comprises the following com-' bination of tools, namely :-a pair of compasses or dividers the legs of which are adapted to telescope to make the device more compact, means for adjusting the legs with reference to a graduated bar, whereby the distance between the points of the compasses may be predetermined for describing any desired arc, or for purposes of measurement; a plumb; a spirit level, and also two marking gages, which may be independently adjusted if required for different measure ments.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes may be made in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed without departing from the spirit of the same.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device as it would appear when closed and employed as a spirit level.
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the same to more clearly disclose its construc tion.
Fig. 3 is a side-elevation with the legs of the comp-ass extended.
Fig. 4 is an elevation of the device showing it employed as a marking gage.
Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view through the le s on :line 55 of Fig. 3.
eferring now to the letters of reference placed upon the drawings "A, denotes a castinghaving a fiat surface A, to adapt it for use as a level. B, indi cates a spirit level mounted in the casting; G, C, designate swinging legs pivoted to the E which impinges upon the extension leg to assist in securing the latter :-the washer also serving to secure the thumb nut against accidental release when adjusted to hold the leg. D, is a scribing point integral with the legs D, adapted to co-act with the lateral extension C, on the end of the legs 0, to serve as a marking gage.
F, is a screw-threaded rod or leg pivoted to the casting A, on which is loosely sleeved a slotted castin G, in which is mounted a traveling nut having a screw-threaded engagement with the rod F. I, I, are link bars connecting the legs C, C, with the casting G. F, denotes a series of graduations on rod F, adapted to be read in conjunction with the knife edge G on the casting G, to indicate the degree in inches to which the pgints of the legs D, D, are extended when se J, denotes a set screw in the casting G, adapted to engage the leg F, to secure the legs D', D, in their adjusted spaced relation.
' K, indicates a ring or loop set in a recess K, formed in the casting A, to which a cord K maybe attached to adapt the device for use as a plumb, the pointed end F of the rod F, serving as the point of the plummet.
L, indicates a strip of wood to which the device is being applied as a marking gage.
Having indicated the several parts by reference letters the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood.
When folded as shown in Fig. 1, the device may be readily carried the pocket, 1t 1s also 1n conditlon for use as a level, or p as a plum-b upon attaching a cordl to the ring K. r When it is desired to describe a predetermined arc, or lay off certain measure-" ments within the capacity of the device, the points of the legs maybe spread apart to the required extent by a reading of the.
pivoted to thecasting, a block sleeved on the rod, links pivoted to the-block and to the,
respective legs, and a nut screwed upon the rod" and adapted; to shift th'e block, whereby the legs may be; adjusted with reference to each other.
2.1m a device of thecharacter described, a casting, a pair of legs pivoted to the casting in spaced relation to each other, a grad- .u ated screw-threaded rod pivoted to the casting between the legs, a blocksleev'ed on said rod anut mounted in said block and screwed upon the rod, links pivoted to the block and to thenlegs, adjustable extensions connected! to the legs, and means for securing the extensions when: adjusted in said- Copies of this patent maybe obtained I011 five cents eech,,byaddressing the Commissioner 01 Patents,
