To all whom it 'may concern.'
Be it known that I, EDD O. STORELEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Enderlin, in the county of Ransom and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to locks and particularly to that class thereof adapted for use on doors to coal vaults, wood sheds, out houses, and the like.
It contemplates the construction of such a device so that there will be a double securing means for the door, said means being doubly locked, thereby requiring a thorough knowledge of the lock in order that the same may be operated.
'A further object is the construction of the lock which will necessitate the operation of the key in both directions to completely release the door.
With the above and other objects in view, this invention consists of the construction, combination and arrangement of parts all as hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the lock, illustrating the internal mechanisms there of; Fig. 2 is a front elevation illustrating the lock carried by the door frame, and thc manner in which the same secures the door; Fig. 3 is a similar view illustrating more in detail the construction of the lock by eliminating the door securing means; Fig. 4t is a section taken along line 4 4 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a section taken along line .55 of Fig. 3; Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the hasp carried by the door adapted to be engaged by the lock.
The present invention resides in the provision of a plurality of hasps carried by the bars and adapted to operate over the frame, thereby being engaged by the lock carried by the frame. This lock comprises a plate having a double acting tumbler pivoted to the back thereof adapted to engage the bolts, said tumbler being operated by a key, it being necessary to operate the key in both directions to reciprocate the bolts. The key is engaged also by a plurality of spring operated catches, which lock the key from rotation when an attempt is made to turn the same, it being essential to move said catches in order to use the key.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, A indicates a fragment of a door hav ing secured thereto adjacent to the swinging edge thereof a pair of parallel plates 10, said plates having pivotally connected thereto the hasps 11, the latter being provided with the upwardly curved portions 12 at their outer extremities, thus supplying a grip in order that the same may be raised.
Located adjacent to the curved portion 12 and carried on the under surface of the hasp 11 is the eye 13, said eye being of angular formation and adapted to receive the bolt as hereinafter more fully described. A lock plate 14 is secured on the door frame B and abuts on the edge thereof adjacent to the door, said plate being provided with the angular openings 15 adapted to receive the eye 13, said openings being adjacent to the bolts. Centrally located with respect to the distance between the openings 15 and adjacent to the edge thereof opposite to the door is the key hole 16, said key hole being of the usual construction and shape. A pair of rectangular openings or slots 17 are arranged on each side of the key hole so that the catches formed on the plate adapted to cover and secrete said key hole may project through the plate and be secured and engaged. A pair of similar' rectangular openings 18 are also disposed on each side of the key hole 16 and of a suiiicient distance therefrom to permit the free operation of the plate heretofore mentioned, said openings being for the reciprocation of the members whereby catches engaging said plates may be operated.
Located adjacent to the two corners adjoining the key hole 16 are the pins 19 about which are wound the coil springs 20, said coil springs extending inwardly toward the key hole, said extensions being twisted to form a catch portion 21 adapted to rest over the openings 17. An angular guide 22 is provided by said catch portions so that the movement thereof may be readily limited. The action of the springs of the portions 21 retains the same normally against the portion of the guide 22 opposite to the edge of the plate, thereby retaining the same in such a position that they normally engage the catches carried by the plate. A button 0r similar member 23 is formed or secured in any manner to the straight portion 21 and projects through the opening 18 operating on the exterior of the plate. A plate 24 is pivoted to an auxiliary plate 25 rigidly secured to the plate 14 and is adapted to project over the key hole 16, said plate being provided at each corner of its free terminal with the lugs or ears 26 and adjacent said lugs or ears with the catches 2T, said catches being adapted to project through the openings 17 and be engaged by the members 21 of the springs 20. A secondary auxiliary plate 25 is carried on the Opposite side of the key hole 16 and has formed thereon the centrally disposed ear or lug QS, the latter being spanned by the similar members 26 carried by the plate Q4 and presenting` the appearance of a hinge when the plate is in its normal or secretive position, thus confusing an unfamiliar operator. From this construction, it will readily be seen that the plate Q4 will be locked in position by the members 21 engaging the catches 27, thereby completely closing the key hole and presenting a deceiving appearance to the operator. It will further be seen that upon placing the key in the hole 16, it will be necessary to lower one or the other of the members 21 in order to rotate the key in either direction.
The lock comprises a retaining plate 29 spaced from the plate 14 by the supporting ears or lugs 30 which are riveted or similarly secured to said plate. The tumbler 31 is pivoted in the space between said plates and is formed with a reduced curved member said member having adjacent to each terminal thereof the slot 33. Oppositely disposed to said curved portion 32 is the tapered bearing projection 34 against which the key indicated in general as C bears.
A pair of bolts 35 reciprocate over the openings 15 and are provided with the eye engaging members 36 at their outer terminals. Each of the bolts 35 is provided with a guide 37 against which the shoulder 3S formed on said bolts bears in order that the motion of said bolts may be limited. At the rear terminal of each bolt is the vertical pin 39 engaged by the slot 33 adjacent thereto. Thus it will be seen that upon rotating the key C so that the same bears against one side of the bearing member 34, the bolt located on the opposite side of the tumbler will be drawn in suiiiciently to release the eye after which the bolts spring back in place, due to the release thereof by the key.
A pair of rectangular studs 40 are provided adjacent the tumblers about which the coil spring 41 is wound, said coil spring bearing against the shoulder 38, thereby exerting a suiiicient force to return the bolts to their normal positions.
From the foregoing it will readily be understood that after the hasps are engaged with the bolts and the plate 21 in its operative position in order to release the hasp it is necessary to move the buttons 23 to the left, referring to Fig. 2, simultaneously, thus disengaging the straight catch portions 21 from the catches 27 of the plate 24 permitting the same to be swung from over the key hole 16. The key is then inserted m the key hole and is operated either upwardly.
or downwardly, still referring to Fig. 2,' it being necessary to lower one of the catch portions in order that the key may pass the same, bringing the key into operative engagement with the portion 34 of the tumbler, thus withdrawing the bolt on the opposite side of the tumbler to the key withdrawing its engagement with the eye 13 of the hasp coperating therewith permitting said hasp to be removed manually, after which the key passes under the portion 34 permitting the bolt to spring back to its normal position and the key to pass to the remaining catch member 21: thus it will be seen that one of the hasps is released. In order to release the remaining hasps it is necessary to rotate the key in an opposite direction moving the opposite catch member and permitting the key to operate on the opposite side ot' the portion 34 of the tumbler, thus drawing back the bolt coperating with the remaining' hasp and permitting the latter to be released. It will be also understood that the catch members 21 perform the double function of securing the secret-ing plate 24 when the same is in its operative position and also retain the key from operating against the tumbler until the catches are moved.
Having thus described my invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a door frame, having a door cooperating therewith, of a lock carried by the door frame, of al plurality of hasps carried by the door, a plurality of bolts in said lock adapted to engage said hasps, means whereby said bolts may be operated independently by the same key.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a door frame, having a door cooperating therewith, a lock carried by said frame, a plurality of spring operated bolts in said lock, a tumbler engaging said bolts, a plurality of hasps carried by the door adapted to be engaged by said bolts, and means whereby a key may be retained from engagement with said tumbler.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination with a door frame, having a door cooperating therewith, a lock carried by said frame, a plurality of spring operated bolts in said lock, a tumbler engaging said bolts, a plurality of hasps carried by the door adapted to be engaged by said bolts, means whereby a key may be retained from engagement with said tumbler and means whereby said last named means may be operated to permit the rotation of the key.
4. In a device of the class described, the combination with a door trame having a door coperating therewith, of a plurality of hasps carried by the door, a lock carried by said frame comprising a plate, a plurality of bolts carried by said plate adapted to cooperate with said hasps, a tumbler adapted to operate each of said bolts independently, and means whereby a key may be retained from operating said tumbler.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination with a door frame, having a door cooperating therewith, of a plurality of hasps carried by said door, and a lock carried by said door frame comprising in combination a plate, a plurality of spring actuated bolts reciprocatingly carried by said plate adapted to cooperate with said hasps, and means whereby each of said bolts may be operated independently.

7. ln a device ot the class ijlescribed, the combination with a door frame, having a door cooperating therewith, or' a plurality of hasps carried by said door, a lock carried by said door frame comprising` in combination a plate, a plurality of spring actuated bolts reciprocatingly carried by said plate adapted to cooperate with said hasps, a tumbler adapted to operate each of said bolts independently, and means whereby said key may be retained from operati ng said tumbler.

In a device of the class described, the combination with a door frame, having a door cooperating therewith, of a plurality of hasps carried by said door, a lock carried by said door frame comprising` in combination a plate, a plurality of spring actuated bolts reciprocatingly carried by said plate adapted to coperate with said hasps, a tumbler adapted to operate each of said bolts independently, having a bearing projection, and means whereby a key may be retained from operating` against said bearing projection.
9. In a device of the class described, the combination with a door frame, having a door cooperating therewith, of a plurality of hasps carried by said door, a lock carried by said door frame, comprising in combination a plate, a plurality of spring actuated bolts reciprocatingly carried by said plate adapted to cooperate with said hasps, a tumbler adapted to operate each of said bolts independently, having a bearing projection, and spring actuating catches adapted to retain said key from operating against said bearing projection.
