Letters Patent No. 97,270, dated November 30, 1,869.

IMPRQVECD FASTENING- FOR BEDSTEAIDS.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the namev To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES BRADWAY, of Maqueketa, county of Jackson, and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Metallic Fastening for Port- ,able Tables, Stands, or Bedsteads; and I do hereby declare the following to be an exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification, inwhich l Figure 1 represents a top View of the fastening, with the rails inserted.

Figure 2 represents the under side and a perspective view of \the same.

Figure shows 'a side elevation of the fastening, with the side rail yand top and bottom posts inserted.

`The nature of my invention consists in the construction of the metallic fastening in one solid casting, having inclined dovetailed mortises between side flanges, l

for inserting the side rails of a bedstead or table, and a double-tapered centre aperture, in which the top and bottom posts are firmly fitted.

To enable others ,skilled in the art to make and u'se my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction.

A represents the metallic casting that is intendedA as a comer fastening for side rails and a support for on the inside than at the outer ends, and the lower end being wider than the top, so as to support a strong leg or post, O, the smaller (as shown at D) being the top or ornamental part.

The fastening A has two angular ends mortised so as to form supports or fastenings for right and lefthand-rails, by anges E E E E, the sides of which are inclined on the inside, so that `the mortise at thetop, as shown at iig. 1, is wider than the bottom of the lnortise, as shown t fig. 2, and the tenon G of the rail H being cut to correspond with the 'width of the mortise between the flanges E and fitting in between the flanges firmly and securely by merely dropping and sliding in the tenoued ends ofthe rails downward, holding the rails closely, and binding them permanently without any bolt, screws, or extra fasten- 1n s.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isy The construction of the metallic fastening A, with its inclined dovetail mortises between the side anges E E and double-tapered centre aperture B, as herein described, and for the purposes set forth.
