PLOW DRAFT APPLIANCE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, \VILLIAM L. VHlTE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Healdsburg, in the county of Sonoma and State of California, have invented a new and useful Plow Draft Appliance, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has relation to plow draft appliances and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts.

The object of the invention is to provide a draft appliance adapted to be attached to the side of a plow beam and which is so connected with the beam as to cause the same to move in a straight forward direction notwithstanding the lateral position of the draft appliance. By using such an appliance it is possible to work the plow close to standing trees or fence lines thus making it possible to work the soil in close proximity to fixed objects.

In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a plow structure showing the draft appliance attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the forward port-ion of a plow beam and parts of the draft appliance attached thereto. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the draft appliance cut on the line 33 of Fig. 2.

As illustrated in the accompanying drawings; the plow beam 1 is provided with a standard 2 to which is attached a plow of the mold-board type, for instance as 3.

An arm 41 is attached at its inner end to the side of the beam 1 at a point between the forward end and the point of attachment of the standard 2 thereto. Said arm is provided with a series of perforations 5 and an eye 6 is adjustably mounted upon the arm 1 and is provided with a transversely disposed bolt 7 which is adapted to be passed through one of the perforations 5. At a point behind the point of attachment of the standard 2 with the beam 1v and upon the same side of the beam 1 as that upon which the arm 1 is located is attached a loop 8 having side portions 9 which are relatively near each other and approximately parallel. A plate 10 is attached to the side of the forward portion of the beam 1 and the said plate 10 is provided with a laterally disposed forward fiange 11. but at the side thereof opposite the side upon which the plate 10 is mounted. The plate 12 also has a laterally disposed flange as at 13 and the flange 13 is parallel with the flange 11 or approximately so.

The flange 13 is provided with elongated slots let which are transversely disposed with relation to the long dimension of the plow beam 1. Bolts 15 pass transversely through the slots let and perforations provided in the flange 11. \Vashers 16 are mounted upon the intermediate portions of the bolts 15 and serve to hold the flanges 11 and 13 at proper distance from each other. An arm 17 is pivotally attached at its inner end to the rear side of the flange 13 and the said arm extends through the space between the washers 16 carried upon the bolts 15 and between the flanges 11 and 13. The arm 17 is provided with a series of perforations 18 and an eye 19 is mounted upon the arm 17 and a bolt 20 passes transversely through the base portion of the eye 19 and one of the perforations 18 in the said arm 17. A draft chain 21 passes through the eyes 19 and 6 and at its rear portion, the said chain is linked into engagement with the approximately horizontal side portions 9 of the loop 8. By this arrangement it is apparent that the chain 21 may be lengthened or shortened as desired and also it will be seen that by positioning the eyes 7 and 19 at dc sired distances upon their respective supporting arms from the sides of the beam 1 that the forward draft may be properly applied to the said beam.

It is of course understood that the draft animal or animals are attached to the forward end of the chain 21 and as the eye 19 is located to one side of the long dimension of the beam 1, it is possible to permit the said beam to travel close to a fence or a tree and at the same time sufficient room will be provided to permit the draft animal or animals to pass by the fence or obstruction without coming in contact with the same. Thus it is possible to cultivate or turn the soil .in close proximity to a fixed object.

By this arrangement of the parts of the draft appliance it will be observed that the arm 17 may swing vertically to a limited extent, its movement being governed by the washers 16 carried by the bolts 15. Also by reason of the fact that the flange 13 is prO- vided with elongated slots 14, the plates 10 and 12 may be attached to plow beams of different thicknesses.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In combination with a plow beam, a draft appliance comprising plates attached to the opposite sides of the forward portion of the beam and having at their forward ends laterally disposed flanges spaced from each other, bolts secured at their end portions in the said flanges, an arm pivoted to one of the flanges and lying between said flanges and bet-ween said bolts, an eye adj ustably mounted upon said arm, an arm attached to the side of the beam at a point intermediate its ends, an eye mounted upon the last said arm, and a draft chain passing through the eyes upon the arms and con necting at its rear end with the beam.

:2. In combination with a plow beam, a

draft appliance comprising plates attached to the forward end of the plow beam and having at their forward port-ions laterally disposed flanges, one of which is provided with elongated slots, bolts passing through the said plates and lying in the said slots, an arm pivotally attached to one plate and lying between the flanges and between said bolts, an arm attached to the side of the plow beam at a point intermediate its ends, eyes adjustably mounted upon said arms and a draft chain passing through the eyes upon said arms and connected at its rear end to the plow beam.
