To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, (lyrics CALVIN Rosa, citizen of the United States of America, residing in Blair township, in the county of \Vashington and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvement in that part of a harness where the hames are coupled together at the top and the spreadreins are supported; and the objects of my improvement are, first, to provide a coupling for the tops of hames rendering them more closely adjustable to the length of the collar; second, to facilitate supporting the opposed inward bends of the top ends of the side-halves of horse collars, especially those made open at the top; third, to provide support for the rein spread-strap at a high point on the hame; fourth, to combine the lock for the hame adjustment with the spread-strap support to simplify the whole; and, fifth, to provide an attachment readily fitted and fastened to hames now in use; all of which with other objects of minor importance' I attain by the mechanism illustrated by the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the whole contrivance applied to a harness; Fig. 2, is a horizontal section on the broken line a of Fig. 1, showing the top of the collar carrying the hame; Fig. 3, is a side face view of the toothed adjusting-plate or bar before it is attached to the hame; and Fig. 4, is an out side face view of the closing-plate detached; in all of which views similar numerals refer to like parts.
On an ordinary wooden hame 2 having the out-edge metal facing-strap or back-iron 3, I illustrate my attachment applied, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The notched bar 4 has a longitudinal base fitted to the facing iron 3; for this fitting it is cross-concaved on the back as shown in Fig. 2, and is made of ductile metal so that it may be bent to fit hames curved at the top as shown. Its outer face is toothed to form the vertical row of notches 6, 6 etc. and the lower end tooth 19 is tapered and extended downward longitudinallyas shown in Fig. 3to form a cold-shut to close through the loop 8 in the lower end of the closing-plate 7 to hinge said closing-plate to said notched bar. The notched bar has the perforations 18 and 18 to receive screws as indicated at 17 and 17 or other suitable means to fasten it to the hame, on which it is disposed above but close to the usual rein-ring 10. The upper end of the notched bar has the chape-loop 5 disposed to project through the slot 9 at the top end of the hinged closing-plate when it is swung against the notched bar to close the notches 6 to retain the ring 15 at the desired adjustment.
The spread-strap 11 looped into the terminal ring 14 to carry the spread-rein 26, has its buckled end 13 inserted through said chape-loop by which it is supported, and where it serves as a key orv cotter 12 to lock the closing-plate closed against the notched bar.
The link or ring 15 through which is looped one end of the top hame-strap 16, is preferably a full circle of diameter much larger than a cross-section of the hame; in any case, either by size or some modified form, it is made of backward and forward extension sutfioient to overlap and give full bearings 23 and 24, on the after-Wale 20 and fore-Wale 21 of the collar 25; as shown in Fig. 2, and in Fig. 1 where the relative position of the collar is indicated by the broken lines 22. This support preserves the curvature of the top ends of the-collar-sides and thereby preserves the pressed form of the neck-pad so that it is not broken, distorted or galling.
The curved broken line b in Fig. 1 indicates the sweep of the top end of the closingplate when it is released by removing the cotter 12 from the loop 5 and is opened to shift the ring to different notches to attain the desired adjustment of the length of the hames to fit the collar.
