To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOREN F. PARSONS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albion, in the county of Orleans and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molds, of which the following is a Specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful. improvements in molds and has for its object to provide a very simple and ellicient device for molding concrete blocks, fence posts, columns, and similar plastic articles.
Another object is to provide suitable means whereby the opposed sides of the mold may be moved outwardly away from the object in such manner as to prevent suc tion between the sides of the mold and the article being molded.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a mold constructed in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the mold; Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view of the chain tightening device.
Referring more particularly to the drawings 5 indicates the side members of a mold adapted in the present instance for the forming of concrete fence posts. The oppos d sides 5 of the mold are movable and formed at their lower ends with the V-shaped recesses 6 into which the plastic material is adapted to flow whereby a suitable anchor may be provided on the post.
The stationary sides 5 of the mold may be supported by means of the struts 5 or in any other suitable manner.
Spaced ears 7 are secured intermediate of the ends of the movable sides 5 of the post and have hingedly secured therebetween the ends of a Ushaped yoke or brace S. This yoke is formed in two sections which are pivotally connected at their outer ends, as shown at 9, the inner ends of said yoke sections being laterally extended, as at 10, and disposed between the ears 7. One of the yoke sections is bent between its ends in the form of a U-shaped depression 11. A plate Specification of Letters Patent.

and is bent oppositely to the depression 11 thereby forming a housing. This housing is adapted to receive a chain 13 which is freely movable therethrough in the operation of the invention, as will hereinafter appear. An arm 14 extends outwardly from the yoke section and has pivoted to its extremity the holding dog 15 which is adapted to engage with any one of the links of the chain and secure the sections against outward or spreading movement.
In order to tighten the chain whereby the mold members may be more securely engaged with the plastic mass, the other end of said chain is secured to the extremity of an eye bolt 16 which is adjustably carried in a pivoted U-shaped member 17. This mem her is arranged upon the other of the yoke sections and the bolt 16 extends through the intermediate or bight portion thereof. The shank of this bolt is threaded to receive an adjusting nut 18. It will be obvious that when this nut is threaded inwardly upon the bolt and brought into binding engagement with the member 17, that the chain will be drawn taut between the opposed yoke sections, thereby holding the opposed sides of the mold against outward movement.
The lower ends of the movable sides 5 of the mold are spaced apart by means of the hinged block 19. This block is arranged on the lower end of one of the stationary sides and is supported in its proper position between the sides of the mold by means of a leaf spring 20, said spring being secured at one end to one of the movable sides of the mold, and having its free end engaged with the under side of the block 19 whereby the same will be securely retained in its proper position.
In the operation of my improved mold, the sides of the mold are arranged in the usual manner, and the cement or other plastic material poured into and between the same and properly tamped to secure adhesion of the cementitious particles. It is then allowed to stand for a certain period in order to solidify when it is ready for removal. The chain 13 is then released by throwing the holding dog 15 outwardly. The sides of the mold are then moved in opposite directions transversely across the face of the post. This movement is permitted by the hinged connection between the yoke sections and the mold sides and obviates the liability of the suction which would be created were the mold members moved away from each other in a lateral direction. After the sides of the mold have been moved past the post, they can then be moved outwardly and such movement will release the spring 20 from engagement with the block 19, whereupon the post will move downwardly bet-ween the other stationary side members of the mold. In this manner the molded post may be easily and quickly removed without danger of marring its surfaces, whereby practically perfect results are assured.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a mold for cement posts, columns, building blocks, and the like which is of very simple construction, durable in use, and highly efficient in operation.
The molded article may be very quickly and easily removed from the mold and the plastic material may be tamped after pouring without danger of spreading the mold sections and thus necessitating the repouring of the material.
\Vhile I have shown the preferable form of my improved mold and the manner in which the various parts are arranged, it will be understood that the same is susceptible of various modifications without materially departing from the essential features or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
1. A mold of the character described com prising movable side members, a sectional yoke hingedly connected to said members, the outer ends of the yoke sections being pivotally connected, a flexible connection between the yoke sections adapted to hold the same in operative position and means for securing said flexible connection to prevent outward movement of the yoke sections and the mold members.
2. A mold of the character described com prising opposed movable members, an out wardly extending yoke, formed in two sec tions having their inner ends hingedly connected to said mold members, the outer ends of said yoke sections being pivotally connected, a chain connecting said yoke sections, means carried by one of said sections engaging with the chain to hold the same in connection therewith and means for tightening said chain between the sections to hold the mold members against outward movement.
8. A mold of the character described comprising opposed movable members, a yoke formed in two sections having their inner ends laterally disposed and pivotally connected to the mold members, the outer ends of said sections being pivotally connected, a chain secured at one end to one of said sections, a housing carried by the other section, said chain being movable through said housing and a holding dog carried by the other section adapted to engage said chain and hold the same against movement whereby said mold members are retained in their closed positions.

A mold of the character described comprising opposed movable members, a yoke formed in two sections, said sections having their inner ends pivotally connected to said members, a chain connecting said yoke sections and movably engaged with one of them, a holding dog movably carried by one yoke section adapted to engage said chain to hold the same against movement, means for tightening said chain carried by the other of the yoke sections and means arranged between the lower ends of the mold members to support the article being molded.
5. A mold of the character described com prising opposed movable members, a yoke formed in two sections pivotally connected, spaced ears carried by each of said members, the inner ends of said sections being pivotally secured between the ears, a flexible connection between the yoke sections and releasably engaged with one of them, means carried by said sections to hold the chain against movement and means carried by the other yoke section for tightening the chain between said sections, a block hingedly secured to one of said members at its lower end adapted to space said members from each other and means carried by the other member to support said block.
6. A mold for fence posts comprising two movable mold members, a yoke formed in two sections pivotally connected, the inner ends of said sections being hingedly secured to the outer faces of said members, a flexible connection between said yoke sections, said mold members having V-shaped recesses in their inner opposed faces to form an anchor on the lower end of the post, a block hingedly secured to one of said members at its lower end to space the members from each other and support the post, and a leaf spring carried by the other of said members engaging with the under side of said block.
