Application filed August 25 1908. Serial K0345016 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP J. HAAs, citizen of the, United States, residing at York, in the county of York and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reinforced-Concrete Posts,
of which the following is a specification.
' The present invention relates to improvef ments in posts, and more particularly to that type of posts which are formed of. concrete, cement, artificial stone,-or other like material which is molded into'sha c When in a plastic condition and permitte to set,'after which it becomes hard and solid.
The object of the invention is the provision of a novel means for reinforcing the' post whereby the reinforcing members are brought fully into play as, soon as the post is subjected to a bendingstrain and Wlll not ,stretch a; sufiicient amount to permit of thepost cracking.
Fora full understanding of the inventionand the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the'details of construction and the means for effecting result, reference is to .be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which v Figure 1 is a erspectiveview of a post embodying the lnvention, portions being broken away, Fig.- 2 is an enlarged hori- .zontal sectional View on the line 22 of Fig.

Corresponding and like parts are referred 'are' provided with the. centrally disposed threaded openings 2 and also-with the side openings 2* which are designed to receive the concrete or plastic material so asto prevent rotation of the-tension nuts'and secure a :firm bond between the same and the body portion of the post In the present instance these nuts are rectangular in' shape and are provided upon opposite edges with the notches .3, the said notched edges being curved inwardly so that the inner and opposing faces of-the nuts are concaved, while the outer faces'are convexed.
. Extending longitudinally through the body portion of the post and embedded therein are the loops 4 of reinforcing wire, the ends of the endless loops being passed around the nuts 2 and caused. to engage the notches 3 by means of'which the wires are held in proper position while the post is being molded and previous to the hardening of'the same. r
The posts are designed to be formed in a mold similar to that disclosed in my copending application for patent filed the 28th day of April 1908, Serial No. 429,679, the 5 ends of the mold being provided with bolts which engage the threaded openings 2 of the nuts. -By turning these bolts the nuts at opposite ends of the post can be drawn apart and the wire loops 4 placed under a high tension. Thesewires are thus held in. a stretched position by means of the bolts until .the plastic material has become thoroughly hardened whenthe bolts are disenfgaged from the nuts, the said nuts being held in position-by the'hardened body por- 'tion of the post and the wires remaining under tension.- With this construction the reinforcing wires are immediately brought into full play as soon as the post is subjected to a bendin strain and the wires will .not stretch a su cient amount to permit cracking of the post as is frequently the case where'they are embedded in the post with I out being placed under tension.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is: a p Y 1. In a post, the combination of a body )OItlOII formed of plastic material, tension- 1ng nuts embedded in the opposite ends of the body-portion and supported entirely by the plastic'mate'rial of the said body por- ':tion, and endless reinforcing loops also embedded in the body portion and passing around the tensioning' nuts, the said reinforcing loops being placed underan initial tension before the plastic material has hardened,

the outer faces of the nuts being convexed to admit of the loops slipping around the same and adjusting themselves previous to the hardening of the plastic body portion;
