To all whom it may. concern:
Be it known that l, LAWRENCE A. WAG- NER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Uhio, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Reinforced lPlastic Fence-Posts with Bases, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in reinforced plastic fence posts .Wlth bases, and more particularly to a post of a type described in my prior United States Patent No. 1,162,322 of 1915. Tn the post referred to T have described and claimed a fence post formed of plastic material and provided upon one face with a longitudinally extending groove, formed llshaped incross section and having transverse openings which lead into the groove, metallic sleeves arranged within the transverse openings together with a tying element to secure'the wires to the post.
The present invention has for its object to modify and improve the reinforced plastic fence post with base, for the purposes hereinafter more fully described.
Another object of the invention is to provide a post of the above mentioned character, which is simple in construction, in-.
expensive to manufacture, durable, easily transported, strong and convenient in use.
Another object of this invention is to provide a bonding rod as a part of the anchor base in conjunction with the metallic reinforcing members, being ill-shaped at the lower extremity and passing directly underneath the bonding rod and ends extending upward disposed near the corners of and within the plastic material of the post.
Another object of the invention is to ro-. vide a reinforced brace portion, w on i wanted, positioned at the upper end of the post, consisting of a recess adapted to receive a brace for the post, the said reinforcing being made doubly strong by the bending. down of one end of the pair of reinforcing members crossin the opposite end of the reinforcing mern ers immediately above said recess. With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described, and then specifically pointed out in the claim and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views and drawings :by the same reference characters.
The improved post 1 is formed of concrete of any suitable composition or compound and comprises a base portion with a transverse opening to receive a bonding rod 3. See Figs. 1 and 2. The post 1 is provided upon one side or face with a longitudinal groove '6 which is preferably ll-shaped in the horizontal cross-section, as more clearly shown in Fig. 1. The post i is rovided with spaced transverse openings ing members i, more specifically described and claimed in my patent above mentioned. These attaching members a secure the wires 5 to the fence. See Fig. 1. It will be noticed by referring to Fig. 1, that the bond ing rod 3 of the base portion passes through the lower portion of the post i as right angles to the wires 5 thereby providlng greater resisting power should pressure he applied against either side of the fence constructed with my improved post.
The post i is reinforced by metallic reinforcing members 2, these reinforcing members passing directly underneath the bond ing rod 3 and extending upwardly near each corner of the plastic post 1 as shown in Figs. 3 and 2 thereby securely binding the anchor base to the post.
The post 1 may be provided upon one of the adyacent surfaces or faces to the face provided with the Ail-shaped groove, with a recess 15, formed in the plastic portion of the post to receive a bracing member when required. The reinforcing members 2 having one arm of the extended portion longer than the other when being shaped for reinforcing purposes are bent at point 10 of the upper portion thereby forming an acute 'lll which lead into the groove 6 as more clearly illustrated in Figs.

In referring to Fig. 2 it will readily be seen that the upper portion of the post pro.- vidcd with the reinforcing members bent and crossing to the opposite side of the post is durably and additionally reinforced and reduces the danger of the post breaking in any portion of it and especially reduces the danger of the upper portion oi the post 16 from being dislodged from the post 1 when the brace its-required.
It will further be seen by referring to Figs. d and 2 that by the passing of the reinforcing members 2 underneath the bonding rod 3 the reinforcin members 2 come in contact with the hon ing rod 3 at the lower portion 14 of said reinforcing members 2, thereby ioining the entire reinforcing structure so that the post will stand extreme strains or pressure which may be exerted from any surface of the post. It will also be seen by referring to Fig. 2 that the bending of the reinforcing members 2 at angle 10 that the reinforcing members 2 are securely held from slipping due to pressure or strain at contact point llof reinforcing members 2 by bonding rod 3 when pressure or strain may be present.

that the downturn portion 12 of reinforcing members 2 insures the post from checking or spreading apart if by any means it should become cracked for the acute angle formed at point 1.0 will not allow the reinforcing members 2 to slip in their embedment or body portion of post 1.
It will also be seen by referring to Figs. 2 and 3 that members 2 and 3 situated and bonded together as they are in the post insures the post from breaking from the anchor or breaking in any other portion of the post and also prevents the post from heaving or raising from its place in the earth and also insures the post remaining perpendicular in the position it is placed in the earth.
In the construction of this post a transverse opening is provided by means of the bondin rod 3 and the mold formed to shape the post having within it the rein forcing members 2 and 3 as arranged and shown in Fig. 4-. The bonding rod 3 is to be Withdrawn after the-post 1 has been molded tion and concrete or plastic material 8 is poured around the post and completely embedding the extended ends of the bonding rod 3 thereby securely bonding the base to the post and forming a complete anchor. The soil 9 is then filled in above the concrete anchor 8 thus formed to the level of the ground or the desired height.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the some, and that various changes in. the shape, size, and arrangement of the same may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
