STRETCHER FOR HOSPITAL AND OTHER PURPOSES.
Specification of Letters Patent.

State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Stretcher for Hospital and other Purposes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a stretcher for use in hospital work or the like, and more particularly of the type of that mounted on suitable wheels and adapted to be propelled from one point to another.
It has for an object the provision of a fender on said stretcher to prevent injury to or marring of a wall, a piece of furniture or other object with which the frame of the stretcher may collide, and also reduce the jars or shocks to a patient who may occupy the stretcher.
For the purpose of explaining the invention, the accompanying drawing illustrates a satisfactory reduction of the same to practice, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific arrangement and organization shown and described.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a stretcher embodying my invention. Fig.
2 represents a transverse section thereof on a line 00-02, Fig. l, on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 represents a section of a modification of the same.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings:1 designates what is known as a wheel stretcher, the same being composed of a bed support of the form of a mattress or bed-bottom 2 and running gear on which the same is mounted.
3 designates the frame which borders the several sides of mattress or bed bottom 2, the same having in its outer surface the channel 4, seated in which is the cushion or buffer 5, which is preferably a tube of soft rubber or other elastic, flexible or pliable material, the same projecting beyond said frame and the outer sides of the running gear so that in the event of the stretcher colliding with or striking a wall, a piece of furniture or other object, the blow or shock of the same will be received by said cushion or buffer as a fender and so prevented from injuring or mar-ring said object or materially jarring the one who may occupy the stretcher. In lieu of said cushion or buffer being of tubular form, I may employ one for the same purpose of solid construction, as at 6, Fig. 3, without producing different results, except that it may be less gentle in its operation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1-- A wheeled stretcher composed of a bed bottom, a border-frame therefor, running gear on which said frame is supported, and a cushion member on the exterior of said frame, the latter having therein a channel which extends horizontally around the same, and said cushion being partly seated in said channel and partly projecting beyond the exterior of said frame, and the outer sides of said running gear.
