Description
met (Milice.
Letters Pa'tent No. 97,072, dated November 23, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN BLACKINGBOX.
The Schedule referred to ip these Letters Patent and making part of the lame.
. To all whom fit may concern Be it known `that I, CHARLES H. GATCHELL, of Oldtown, in the county of Penobscot, and State of Maine, have invented a new. and useful Improvement in ABlacl-:ing-Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same,'reference being had to the accom panyin g drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in blackingboxes; and consists in providing pointed tacks, projecting downward from the bottom, for holding the box from being moved around on the table or other board whereon it sets, when rubbing the brush on the blacking to charge it fori-applying to the shoe.
The drawing represents a perspective view of a blacking-box, constructed according to my improvement.
A is the box, and B, the points or tacks whereon it is supported. I prefer to apply these points by first punching holes through the vbottom of the box, say when stamping the same., and then thrusting through the holes, from the inside, common tacks with heads, andsecuring them by soldering the heads upon the inside of the bottom, which may be readily done by letting fall a drop oi' solder on each. 'lhey may, however, be attached in other ways.
I am aware'of the patent .granted to Bacon and Clark, No. 7 4,276, wherein is represented a blackingbox with legs fitted to it, and provided with a holder, to be used for the saine purpose; but my invention is distinguished from that in not requiring-the said holder, which is expensive and very liable to be lost, whereas my holding-device is comparatively inexpensive, and is not detachable from the box.
Having thus described my invention, l
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent As an improved article of manufacture, blackingboxes, provided with sharp points or tacks project# ing from the bottom, and adapted for holding the box on a board or table when rubbing the brush on the blacking, as specified and shown.
CHARLES H. GATCHELL.
