To all whom it may concern:
.l 3e it known that I, WVJLLIAM I-I. Coon, a citlzen of the United States, residing at Sturg1s, county of St. Joseph, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burglar-Alarms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in burglar alarms.
The main objects of this invention are, first, to provide an improved detonating burglar alarm adapted to be attached to a door or window. Second, to provide an improved burglar alarm which can be readily adjusted from its operative to its inoperative positlon, or vice versa. Third, to provide an improved burglar alarm which is very simple in structure and manipulation and not likely to get out of repair in use. Fourth, to provide an improved burglar alarm which is simple in its parts and the parts are readily assembled.
Further objects, etc., in which:
Figure 1 is a plan View of my improved burglar alarm, the same being shown in operative position on a door. Fig. 2 is a detail side elevation of the structure appearing in Fig. 1, the same being shown in its actuated position by dotted lines. Fig. 3 is an end elevation looking from the bottom of Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail section taken on a line corresponding to line 4-4 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the little arrows at the end of the section lines, the trigger being shown in its inoperative positions by dotted lines.
In the drawing similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawing,'1 represents a door casing and 2 a door, the door and door casing being shown herein in conventional form.
The base plate 3 is adapted to be mounted upon the door casing as illustrated, or upon the meeting rail of an upper window sash when applied to a window so that the device is operated by the opening of the door, or by the raising of the lower or lowering of the upper window sash.
The base plate is preferably secured by means of screws 4 as illustrated. On this base plate is an outwardly projecting trigger post 5 which is notched at 6 and 7 to receive the cartridge holder carrying arm 8. The arm 8 is provided with a cylindrical holder 9 at its outer end for the cartridge 10. This arm is preferably carried by the coiled s )ring 11 which is secured to the base plate. no end of the spring 11 is preferably extended to form the cartridge holder arm 8, the end being coiled to form the holder 9 and extended laterally to form the finger piece 12, the other end of the spring is preferably extended into the spring supporting arm 13 which is arranged through an upwardly projecting support 1 1 on the base and secured by the clamping fingers 15. The end of the arm 13 is preferably turned laterally at 16 to support the frame in an upright position. On the base is an upwardly projecting anvil 17 against which the head of the cartridge is struck when the trigger releases the cartridge holder arm. The base plate, trigger post, anvil, spring supports and spring clamping fingers are preferably formed integrally of plate metal as illustrated as this can be readily done and the parts formed very economically.
The anvil is preferably inclined as illustrated and made of considerable length the cartridge is sure to strike properly in firing the same.
The trigger 18 is pivoted upon the trigger post at 19. This trigger is provided with a notch 20 adapted to engage the cartridge holding arm 8. When the cartridge holding arm is engaged in the notch (3 it supports the trigger in operative position. WVhen it is engaged in the notch 7 it holds the trigger in its inoperative position as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 4. By the manipulation of the trigger the parts can be adjusted to their operative or inoperative position so that the device is very convenient in its manipulation.
\Vhile the particular form of my invention illustrated is a very desirable embodiment thereof, I am aware that it is capable of considerable variation in structural details without departing from my invention, and I desire to be understood as claiming my improvements, not only in the specific form illustrated, but broadly as well within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a burglar alarm, the combination with a base plate; an anvil on said base plate; a cartridge holder; a swinging arm by which said cartridge holder is carried;
a coiled supporting spring for said arm; a l trigger being notched to engage said car supporting arm for said spring having a laterally turned end, one end of said spring being extended to form said cartridge holder arm and coiled to form said cartridge holder and the other end being extended to form said spring supporting arm; a support on said base through which said spring supporting arm is arranged; clamping fingers on said base for said spring supporting arm; a trigger post adapted to receive and retain said cartridge holder arm in its set position; and a trigger pivoted on said post to engage said cartridge holder arm.
2. In a burglar alarm, the combination with a. base plate; an anvil on said base plate; a cartridge holder; a swinging arm by which said cartridge holder is carried; a coiled supporting spring for said car tridge holder arm; a supporting arm for said spring, one end of said spring being extended to form said cartridge holder arm and the other end being extended to form said spring supporting arm; clamping fingers on said base for said spring supporting arm; a trigger post adapted to receive said cartridge holder arm and retain it in its set position; and a trigger pivoted on said post to engage said cartridge holder arm.
3. In a burglar alarm, the combination with a base plate; an anvil on said base plate; a cartridge holder; a swinging arm by which said cartridge holder is carried; a coiled supporting spring for said arm; a supporting arm for said spring, one end of said spring being extended to form said swinging arm and the other end being extended to form said spring supporting arm; a trigger post adapted to receive and retain said cartridge holder arm in its set position and a trigger pivoted on said post to engage said cartridge holder arm when set and'to release it from said post when actuated.
4. In a burglar alarm, the combination with a base plate; a trigger post having a pair of notches therein; an anvil; a cartridge holder; a cartridge holder arm adapted to be engaged in said notches in said post; a spring for said cartridge holder arm; and a trigger. pivoted on said post, said tridge holder arm, said cartridge holder arm being adapted when engaged in one notch to hold said trigger in its inoperative position and when engaged in the other notch to support said trigger in its operative position, said trigger being adapted to be manipulated to shift said arm from one notch to the other.
5. In a burglar alarm, the combination with a base plate; a trigger post having a pair of notches thereon; an anvil; a cartridge holder; a cartridge holder arm adapted to be engaged in said notches in said post; a spring for said cartridge holder arm; and a trigger pivoted on said post, said trigger being notched to engage said cartridge holder arm, said cartridge holder arm being adapted when engaged in one notch to hold said trigger in its inoperative position and when engaged in the other notch to support said trigger in its operative position.
6. In a bur lar alarm, the combination with a base plate, of an inclined anvil on said base plate; a cartridge holder; an arm by which said cartridge holder is carried;
a spring for said cartridge holder arm; a
trigger post having a notch therein adapted to receive said cartridge holder arm and retain it in its set position; and a trigger pivoted on said post, said trigger being notched to engage said cartridge holder arm, and adapted, when actuated, to disengage it from said post.
7. In a burglar alarm, the combination with a base plate; an anvil on said base plate; a cartridge holder; a swinging arm by which said cartridge holder is carried;
a spring for said cartridge holder arm; a trigger post having a notch therein adapted to receive said arm and retain it in its set position; and a tigger pivoted on said post to engage said cartridge holder arm and lift it from said notch when actuated.
