IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-PLACE STOVES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, BENTLEY O. BIBB and PHILIP KLoTz,of the city of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented an Improved Screen-Cover for the Top Feed-Passage of Fire-Place Stoves; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of the frame or fire-board of a fire-place stove, having our invention applied to it, showing the two sections of the screen together.
Figure 2 is a similar view of the same parts, showing the two sections of the screen separated.
Figure 3 is a vertical central section of the screen and fire-hoard, or frame.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspomling parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to an improvement which is applicable to' magazine fire-place stoves, which are constructed with openings through their tops, through which fuel is supplied to their magazines, at the upper ends thereof. Such stoves require their feed-openings to be covered, and it is desirable to employ a supplemental cover, for hiding from view notonly the feed-opening covers, but also those portions of the tops of stoves which are exposed infront of the fireboards or frames.
Our invention consists in applying screen-covers, for the purpose above named, to the tire-board or frame, which fills up the lire-placeat the sides and top of a stove, when set into its place, whereby the said frame is made to support the said screen.
The following description of our invention will enable others skilled in the art to carry it into effect:
111 the accompanying drawings A represents a frame, or fire-board, which is adapted for enclosing the space in a fire-place around a stove, when set in position. These frames are used in all fire-place stoves, which are made to set partly out into theroom, and they are usually made very neat and ornamental.
B B are concavo-convex plates, perforated, and ornamented with fret-work in any desired manner, and,
made of such size as to cover the top of a fire-place stove, set into the space within the fire -board .or frame A.
The covers or screens B are perforated, to give them an ornamental appearance, but more particularly to allow a free escape, through them, of the heated air which rises from the top of the stove.
The upper edges of the cover-sections or screens B are lipped, and fitted into a curved groove, which is formed'by the two plates (6 and 71, one of which plates may be cast separat' and secured to the frame A by screws, and maybe detached to allow the insertion into'the groove of said screen-sections; or the grooveway or guide for the sections B may be formed into the frame A, or into an ornament applied thereto, and the stop lugs g 9 applied after these sections B are attached.
These lugs g g limit the amount of lateral and downward movement of the screen-sections, by allowing them to be separated, as shown in fig. 2, only so far as it is found necessary to obtain access to the-feedopening of the stove.
Thus arranged and applied to the frame A, it will be seen that the top of the stove, which these screens are designed to cover, forms no part in supporting thenr; they are wholly supported by said frame, and are moved by sliding them laterally and downward. They stand out boldly from the frame, and when adjusted together, as shown in fig. 1, they will hide from view the cover of the feed-opening and the top of the stove, and give the front top-portionof the stove a rounded or spherical form, and also allow heated air to escape freely through them into the room.
