To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ARTHUR P. RHODES, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat- Pin Guides and Hat Protectors and Preservers, of which the following is a specification.

It is the object of my invention to provide means for protecting the material of ladies hats from damage resulting from the use of hatpins, and also to afford means for facilitating and guiding the insertion of the hat pin into place.

The invention consists in the features and combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a front view of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view.

In these drawings 1 indicates the body of the device which may be made of any suitable material, either base or precious metal or other substance, the said body having a base flange or portion and a central hump or raised portion 2, which tapers upwardly forming substantially a frustum of a cone, and which presents a guiding opening or recess 3, tapering inwardly to an aperture 4 of approximately the same diameter as that of the stem of an ordinary hat pin. This hat pin guide and hat protector is secured in position upon the hat at the point where the pin is to be inserted. It may be secured by sewing, as indicated, through the holes 5, or in any other suitable way. By reason of the tapered opening or recess the user is enabled to readily locate the opening for the insertion of the hat pin and the use of this protector Will avoid the necessity of making a large number of punctures in the material of the hat and will also enable the user to insert the hat pin Without exercising the same degree of care which is now used, it being possible to guide the pin quickly into its place in the dark and simply by the sense of touch. In order to hold the hat pin in place more securely I provide a rubber disk 6, which is sewed in place by the same stitches which attach the guide or protector, this rubber disk being punctured by the hat pin when first inserted and thus presenting a gripping surface to engage the hat pin and hold it in place.

The advantages of the device will be obvious, in that it avoids the necessity of making innumerable pin holes through the material of the hat and the costly laces and ribbons with which it may be trimmed, and it enables the user to quickly position the hat pin.

The rubber Washer may be termed a guard in that it prevents the hat pin from slipping or falling out.

I claim as my invention A hat pin guide and guard having a raised central portion provided with a tapered inner portion and with an annular flange extending around the said raised portion, and a rubber guard washer extending below the inner tapered portion and reaching to the outer edge of the annular flange, with means for securing the guide and washer in place, substantially as described.
