E GRIMES v 'FINGER PRO'IEGTOh 7 No. 540,975.
Patentd June 11, 1895 FIG-5- UNITED f STATES PATENT OFFICE."
EMMA GRIMES, OF; NORFOLK, ENGLAND.
FlNGER-PROTECTO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 540,975, dated June 11, 1895. Application filed October 17, 1894. Serial No. 526,118. (No model.) Patented in England December 16, 1890, No. 20,497-
To 01. whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMMA GRIMEs, of Knap-' ton Hall, North Walsham, Norfolk, England, have invented a new and useful Improved Finger-Prote'ctorfor the Use of Seamstresses, (for which I have obtained Letters Patent in Great Britain, dated December .16, 1890, No. 20,497,) of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention is a guard for the goods holding or guiding fingers, in hand sewing and consists in the novel construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation, Fig. 2 a vertical section, and Fig. 3 an end view, of the guard on an enlarged scale.
The purpose of the guard is to avoid the painful pricking of the finger and the roughening of the skin caused by the constant use of the needle by seanlstresses and others.
The guard a is a tapered tubular body of soft rubber having at one end an inwardly projecting annular flange or end portion guarding the edges of the finger tip and is provided in said end with an opening I) of sufficient size to expose a sensitive portion of the finger tip 'for use in manipulating the goods being handled. This end opening I) and the annular flange surrounding it are concentric with the tubular body, and the body is similarly formed throughout its cir-' cumference so that I avoid the necessity of specially arranging the guard upon the finger.
The sides and end portions .of the guard have their exterior surfaces smooth and free of projections or perforations to prevent catching the point of the needle, and also made soft and yielding to avoid any injury to the needle point. The guard as will be.
seen is flexible and elastic so it can fit upon the needle if accidentally caused to penetrate the rubber from entering so far as to injure the finger.
I clairn 1 As a new and improved article of manufacture a guard for the goods holding or guiding finger in hand sewing, composed of a tapered tubular body of soft rubber having at one end aninwardly projecting annular flange or end portion guarding the edges of the finger tip and provided in said end with an opening of sufflcient size to expose a sensitive portion of the finger tip for use in manipulating the goods being handled, such end opening and the annular flange surrounding the same being concentric with the tubular body and the latter being similarly formed throughout its circumference whereby to avoid'the necessity of specially arranging the guard upon the finger, the sides and end portion of the guard having their exterior surfaces smooth and free of projections or perforations to prevent catching the point of the needle, and soft and yielding to avoid any injury to the needle point, the guard being flexible and elastic whereby to fit upon and not interfere with the flexing of the finger all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
