ROBERT ASHTON HANKINS, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF TO EMMA R. LYONS, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
NEEDLE-CASE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RoBERT ASHTON HANKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Needle- Cases, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to special packages, and consists in the simple and inexpensive, compact and convenient needle package hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim appended.
In the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification: Figure 1 is a view showing a needle case constructed in accordance with my invention, as the same appears when its closure flap is opened to expose the needles and permit of the convenient withdrawal of one or more of the same. Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the inner side of the blank of which the case is formed and also showing the needle-bearing strip attached at one end to the inner side of the blank. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal central section of the closed case. Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken on the line 44: of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a transverse section taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
Similar letters designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings, referring to which:
A is a blank, preferably of paper, forming the major part of the case. The said blank comprises an intermediate body portion a, an end flap Z2 designed to cooperate with the body portion in forming a receptacle, and a closure flap 0 arranged at the opposite end of body portion a, with reference to the end flap 6. As best shown in Fig. 1, the end flap 6 is provided with a slit (Z to receive the reduced end 6 of the closure flap, and with an opening f; the latter being located near the upper end of the flap and being designed to expose the needles and to permit of the convenient withdrawal of any one or more of the same.
In addition to the blank described, the case comprises a needle-bearing strip B, preferably of thin textile material, connected at one of its ends 9, by adhesive or other suitable means, to the inner side of the Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 11, 1909.

blank A in position to expose the needles that it carries through the opening f.
In making up the case, the strip B is provided with a proper quota of needles, as shown, and is connected as stated to the inner side of the blank. The blank is then folded to carry the flap 5 against the body portion a, and the opposed side portions of the flap and body portion are connected together by adhesive, as indicated by h in Fig. 4, to form the receptacle in which the strip B loosely hangs. The closure flap c is then folded against the outer side of the flap Z) and its end is inserted in the slit (Z, whereupon it will serve to cover the opening 7 and the exposed portions of the needles and will prevent moisture from gaining access to and deteriorating the latter.
When it is desired to take a needle or needles from the case, it is simply necessary to open the flap c as shown in Fig. 1, and then withdraw the needle or needles from the strip B.
WVhen desired the needles may obviously be placed in the strip B after the case is made up in the manner described; and in either case it will be noted that the loose arrangement of the lower portion of the strip B in the receptacle, formed by the body portion a and flap b, will tend to prevent accidental bending or breaking of the needles.
It will be gathered from the foregoing that my novel needle case is efficient for the purposes stated and at the same time, because of its construction and the small amount of material that it embodies, is adapted to be sold with profit for a very small price.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, 1s:
In a needle case, a folded blank comprising a body, an end-flap opposed to the body and having an opening in its upper portion and aslit in its lower portion, and a closure flap having a reduced end adapted, in one position of the flap, to be inserted in the said slit of the end flap, means connecting the o posed side portions of the body and end flap and forming a receptacle between the two, and a strip connected at one end to the inner side of the folded hlank and In testimony whereof I have hereunto set adapted to hang loosely in the said reoepmy hand in presence of two subscribing wittacle and also adapted to carry needles in nesses.
such position that When the closure flap is ROBERT ASHTON HANKINS. open, portions of the needles will be eX- Vitnesses: posed through the said opening in the end J. H. DMEZA,
flap. P. NATHAN.
