CHARLES SIIRO, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Letters .Paten-t No. 96,844, dated November 16, 1869.
^ IMPROVEMENT IN WATCH-WINDING AND SETTING ATTACHMENT.
LOM
The Sehcdnl.; referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES Srmo, ot the city, county, and State of New York, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Winding and Setting-'Attach ment for lVatches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to 'make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part ot' this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a perma- 7nent attachment to the post of the fusee or barrel,
whereby the watch may be. both wound and set; and
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of' parts for effecting the result.
Figure l represents a plan view of a watch, provided with my improvements, when opened at the back;
Figure 2represents .the same witlrt-hc cap shut down; Y
Figule 3 represents a side elevation of' a part ofthe movement when detached. from thc case; and
Figure 4 represents a similar view partly sectioned.
The upper end of the t'usee-sh'ait is provided with a latchet-clutch, a, permanently attached to it, and a hollow drum or sleeve, b, is placed on this clutch a., so as to slide up or down on it.
The said drum carries a spring, c, which, falling into grooves in the clutch, will hold it either up or down, as it may be placed.
The 'said drum alsocarries, at the lower end, a
t toothed wheel, d, and atfthe upper end, a ratchet, f.
The folding handle g g is also attached to the upper end, the part g being crotclied and connected by a pin passing through the sleeve and the ratchet f, and
the part y is notched in the side. and. jointed to thc upper end of the part g, botlnbcing provided with openings, suited in shape and arrangement to permit the parts to be folded down, as represented in figs. l and 2, into a recess in the cap.
Then the attachment is 'pressed down into the p0- sition represented-in tig. 1, the clutches. are in gear with each other, and the wheel d is disconnected with the wheel 7|-, which belongs to the train connecting with the hands'. In this position, the handle g g is turned back and forth, imparting an intermittentm'otion to the fusee, the clutches slipping at each return;-
motion.
IVhen the attaclnn'cnt is adjusted to the position shown in 'g. 4, the clutches are disengaged and the wheels put into gear for adjusting the hands.,
The object of the spring c to hold the attachment in either position, with -suiicient strength to prevent it being.inadvertently moved out of place while working, either for winding or setting. Y
By reason of' the double connection of the handle g y', it folds nicely into` the' circular hold in -the cap, around the post required for turning the said handle.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure-,by Letters Patent The combination of fusee-post, fixed and movable clutch-sleeve l), and arranged for winding and sett-ing
