PUZZLE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT HARRY VHEELER, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVoi-cester, in the county of Wrorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Puzzle, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a puzzle.

The principal objects of the invention are to provide a simple and inexpensive arrangement of relatively movable cards or disks of such a nature that incomplete pictorial representations or Jthe like upon the faces thereof can be completed or made to change their appearance by moving the cards relatively to each other; to provide convenient means for operating the same; and to provide a construction having the above mentioned features in which certain portions of the representations can be made to disappear when the cards are arranged in a certain position or to appear in such positions that the incomplete representations will be completed.

Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in whichk Figure l is a plan of one side of a puzzle cimstructed in accordance with this invention; Fig. is a central transverse sectional',

view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a plan of the opposite side.

In the form of the invention shown the puzzle is shown as made up of three cards or disks A, B and C, of a general circular form and of substantially the same size. The outer cards A and C are provided on their outer faces with a series of incomplete pictorial representations a. and c, so that when the puzzle is viewed from one side, those on one outer card will be visible; and when viewed from the other, those on the opposite side of the other outer card will appear. In the present instance these representations are shown in the form of headless bodies arranged so that the necks thereof come substantially at the circumference of said disks. Each one of the cards also is provided with a plurality of outwardly extending projections (Z which are spaced apart at irregular distances so as to form spaces or openings between them. These projections are all located outside the circumference of the cards or the circular line along which the necks of Specication of Letters Patent.

the incomplete representations are located. They constitute means for turning the cards and for registering them properly together. As they are of the same size and shape, when two or more are nearly in alinement they can be brought perfectly into registration, by grasping them between the nger and thumb and holding them tightly. On the reverse sides of the intermediate card or cards some of these projections are provided with representations b each of which is adapted to complete one of the incomplete representations a or c of the outer cards when brought into proper registration therewith. For this purpose they are shown in the form of representations of heads. Not all of the projections, however, are provided with such representations, some of them at least on the intermediate cards, are left blank at least so far as representations of this character are concerned. These therefore are regions without representations corresponding with those on the outer cards. The projections on the outer cards are allblank on their outer surfaces, so far as the incomplete pictorial representationsy above referred to are concerned but some of them have pictorial representations on their inner or reverse faces. It will be seen therefore that as the cards are turned on their axes to different positions in which certain projections on one card register with certain ones on the others the blank projections will cover one or more of the incomplete representations on the cards at the rear thereof.

The parts are so arranged that in one position the blank projections taken together will cover all of the illustrative projections located on the cards behind them, so that none of the headless bodies will be provided with a head. Preferably the arrangement is such that in this single position the bodies on both sides will appear headless. This constitutes a solution of the puzzle provided the same conditions are present on both sides thereof. The puzzle can also have the incomplete parts so arranged as to be solved in the opposite manner, that is, by placing the parts in such position that there will be a head on each of the bodies on the front cards on both sides thus completing all the illustrations. Other ways of using the puzzle are possible, as for example, the solution may consist in having certain of the heads register With certain of the bodies, While the rest are concealed.

`While I have illustrated and described a preferred form of the invention, I am aware that many modifications can be made therein, by any person skilled in the art Without departing from the scope of the invention as expressed in the claims. Therefore, I do not Wish to be limited to all the details of construction shown and described, but

What I do claim is l. As an article of manufacture, a puzzle comprising a plurality of cards of a general circular form pivotally connected at their centers, each card having projections at its circumference by which the cards may be turned relatively to each other, certain of the projections on all the cards except the front one having representations thereon so arranged that in one position of the cards certain of said representations Will be covered and concealed by projections in front of it.

2. As an article of manufacture, a puzzle comprising a plurality of cards of a general circular form pivotally connected, each card having projections by Which the cards may be turned relatively to each other, certain of the projections on all the cards except the front one on both sides having representations thereon so arranged that in one position of the cards each of said representations Will be covered and concealed by projections in front of it When viewed from either side. i

3. As an article of manufacture, a puzzle comprising a plurality of cards of substantially the same size pivotally connected, the outer cards having incomplete pictorial representations on their outer faces, and having regions free from said pictorial representations on their outer faces, part only of said regions having representations on their inner faces each constituting aconstitnent portion adapted to complete some of said incomplete representations, the path of motion of said regions relative to the other cards being outside the limits of said incomplete pictorial representations, a card between the tWo outer cards having regions at the same distance from the common center as said regions on the outer cards, some only of which have representations constituting constituent portions adapted to complete some of said incomplete representations, all of said regions not having such representations, constituting covers for concealing such of said regions as may be moved to a position behind the same.

4. As an article of manufacture, a puzzle comprising a plurality of cards inovably connected, the outer card having a plurality of incomplete pictorial representations on its outer face, a rear card having an incomplete representation located and arranged to complete any one of the plurality of the first named incomplete representations, when moved to certain positions with respect to the outer card on which they are located, said outer card having projections extending to the peripheries of the rear cards in all positions thereof for concealing all of said incomplete representations on the cards behind it in certain positions thereof, and to expose some and conceal others when in other positions.

5. As an article of manufacture, a puzzle comprising a plurality of cards pivotally connected, the front card having incomplete pictorial representations on its outer face, and having regions on its outer face free from said pictorial representations, the rear card having regions having representations on their inner faces each constituting a constituent portion adapted to complete some of said incomplete representations, a card between the tivo outer cards having regions at the same distance from the connnon center as said regions on the outer card, some only of which have representations constituting constituent portions adapted to complete some of said incomplete representations, all of said regions not having such representations constituting covers for concealing such of said regions on the card at the rear as may be moved to a position behind the same.
