UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN HARRIS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BADGE-BAR.
SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 675,213, dated May 28, 1901.
Application filed November 21, 1900. Serial No. 37,198- N mod l.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN HARRIs,a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have in vented a new and Improved Badge-Bar, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a badgeJoar, which comprises a back plate, a front binding-rim, a panel bearing insignia or ornamentation, and pins at the back for securing the bar and the badge-ribbon, the various parts being held together by certain novel features of construction, which constitute my invention.
This specification is a specific description of one form of the invention, while the claim is a definition of the actual scope thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a front view of the device. Fig. 2 is a back view thereof. Fig. 3 is an enlarged section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a view of the blank of the binding-rim, and Fig. 5 is a view of the blank of the back.
a represents the front binding-rim. b represents 'the panel, which may be of celluloid or other material and printed or or namented as desired.
0 represents the back plate, the general contour of whichis the same as that of the binding-rim. This back plate is provided with a pin d, adapted to engage the coat of the wearer to sustain the badge-barthereon, and a pin e, adapted to be attached to the ribbon, so as to support the same below the badge-bar in the usual manner. These pins 01 and e are formed, preferably, of an integral piece of spring-wire, the middle portion of which is held by two lugs f, struck up from the material forming the back plate 0. The ends of the pins d and e work, respectively, with keepers g, also struck up from the back plate.
Now for the purpose of fastening together the rim (1 and the back plate 0 I provide the rim on its inner edges with a number of pliable fingers a. (Best shown in Fig. 4:.) The back plate 0, as well as the panel b, is formed with a number of slits 0, corresponding exactly with the positions of the fingers a on the rim a. Fig. 5 best illustrates the arrangement of these slits.
In assembling the parts the panel 29 is placed on the back plate, and then the rim is placed on the panel. The fingers a are bent laterally to the plane of the rim and are projected through the slits in the panel I) and the slits c in the back plates 0. The ends of the fingers a are now bent to lie fiat against the rear surface of the back plate, extending either inward toward the center thereof or outward from the center, as desired, the direction in which the fingers are bent being immaterial. By this device the three parts forming the badge-bar are clamped firmly together and a strong construction produced. By forming the fingers a at the inner edge of the rim or and by passing these fingers through openings in the panel and back plate I provide a badge the outer edges of which are smooth and not obstructed by the clamping-fingers, which injure the appearance of the badge-bar and are also so exposed that they are readily broken OE and the bar destroyed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A badge-bar, comprising a back plate having openings therein adjacent to its edges, a panel lying against the front face of the.back plate, and a binding-rim lying around the edges of the panel to hold the same against the back plate, the inner edges of the binding-rim being coincident with the openings in the back plate and the binding-rim having pliable fingers formed integral therewith and projecting backward from'its inner edges at right angles to the plane of the badge-bar, such fingers being passed through the panel and through the openings in the back plate,
and clenched against the back plate to hold 5 the binding-rim in place and render the fastenings invisible at the front of the badgebar. I
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
BENJAMIN HARRIS.
