Description

H'EMPEL & SCHAUIVI.
Heating Stove.
I Patented. Nov. 16, I869.
N. PETERS FHOTO-UTH v ifinited gnaw figment can.
Letters Patent No. 96,806, dated November 16, 1869.
HEATING-STOVE.
The Schedule referredto in them Letters Patent and making part of the lame To whom it may concern Be it known that we, CHARLES HEMPEL and J0- SEPH SCHAUM, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne, and Stateof Michigan, have invented a new and use-. ful Improvement in Heating-Apparatus; and we do declare that the following is-a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this specification, in whichv Figure his. a perspective view, with the top partially. broken out, to show the vpan for reception of non-conductingsubstance.
Figure 2 is a plan view, with top removed.
Figure 3 is a vertical section, showing position of the stove.
Like letters indicate like parts in each figure.
The nature of this invention relates to the construction of a stove, of any. ordinary construct-ion, placed within a radiating-chamber; and consists in the combination of a stove with such radiating-chamber, and in the peculiar construction of the latter.
By the arrangement hereinafter described, all danger from fire, taking from exposed stoves, is avoided, a very large radiating-surfiice is obtained, and great economy in fuel had, while the rzuliating-chamber may be made an ornamental centre-table for a parlor, a desk for an'ofiice,or a counter for a store.
In the accompanying drawings- A-represents a-radiating-case,-provided with gratings or, registers a, and lattice-work door b, the base of the case being an ash-pit, and provided with an ash-pan, B. V
This case may be made of any suitable metal, sheet or cast, or of marble, stone, or other similar material.
To its top is fitted a sunken pan, 0, within which to place any non-conducting material, so that the heat will be compelled to radiate through the sides of the case.
A marble slab, 1), may form an elegant top to the whole, and will be protected from injury from the heat by means of the pan 0 and its contents.
Immediately above the ash-pan B, there is fitted to the interior of the case a diaphragm, E, with a hole through it, through which the ashes of the fire are discharged into the ash-pan.
Snrmouuting this diaphragm, and over the hole therein, is placed the cylindrical coal-stove F, whose base is the diaphragm, but whose construction otherwise is similar to that of all cylindrical stoves.
This stove is provided with the usual door for feeding coal, which should be immediately opposite the door b in the case. It is also provided with a draughtdoor and smoke-pipe, the latter of which should lead. through a suitable hole in the rear of the case, and thence to the chimney.
The top .of this store is a circular drum, I, within which are secured the wings (I, in such a manner that the smoke and heat will be compelled to travel the tortuous course indicated by the arrow.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The radiating-case A, provided with registers a, door b, ash-pan B, sunken pan 0, and diaphragm E, or their known equivalents, when arranged to operate as herein set forth.
2. 'The' cylindrical stove F, whose base'is the diaphragm E, and whose top is provided with the drum I and win gs (I, when constructed substantially as shown.
In a heating-apparatus, the combination of the case A and stove F,'when each is constructed as herein described, and when both are arranged and operate substantially as herein described.
