STOVE-LEG CASTER.

Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALMEDA C. MrLLER, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at St. Thomas, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stove- Leg Casters, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in stove legs, particularly with reference to casters for stove legs which are foldable so that they may be disposed within the stove legs out of the way and to enable the stove leg to bear directly on the floor or hearth when the stove is in the proper place for use, the said casters, being adapted to, by gravity, assume position directly under the stove legs when the stove is raised a slight distance, so that the stove may then be readily rolled on its casters from point to point, the said invention consisting in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings z--Figure l is a perspective of a stove provided with legs having casters in accordance with my invention, the casters being shown in operative position under the legs. Fig. 2 is a detail vertical sectional view of a stove leg provided with my improved caster, the caster being shown in operative position, under the stove leg. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the same showing the caster folded up within the stove leg, out of the way and the stove leg bearing directly on the supporting surface or iioor.

In accordance with my invention7 I provide a stove leg, which is hollow and open on its rear side as at 2 with a plate 3 of a size and shape adapting it to fit in t-he lower end of the stove leg and provided at its outer edge with a lip 4 to bear directly under the outer side of the stove leg. The said plate is provided on its upper side at its inner end with a boss 5 through which extends an opening which receives a pivot 6, the said pivot also extending through openings in the sides of the stove leg and adapting the said plate to be turned outwardly so as to close and bear under the lower end of the stove leg as shown in Fig. 2 or to be turned inwardly and raised above the lower end of the stove leg as shown in Fig. 3.

A caster 7 which is here shown as of inverted U-shape is pivotally mounted and connected to the plate 3 by a pivot bolt S, a

washer 9 being interposed between the caster -and the under side of the plate and washers l0 being here shown as being interposed between the upper side of the said plate and the under side of the nutll which is screwed on the said bolt. A roller 12 is mounted between t-he arm of the caster on an axle or pivot 13.

It will be observed by reference to Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings that the pivot connection 8 between the caster and plate is to one side of the pivot connectio-n 6 between the plate and the stove leg and it will be observed upon reference to Fig. 2 that when the plate 3 is turned outwardly andy to lowered position so as to close the lower end of the stove leg, the caster is disposed directly under the stove leg so that its roller bears on the floor and hence enables the stove to be readily moved from place to place.

lVhen the plate 3 is turned inwardly through half a revolution, it moves from under the lower end o-f the stove leg and disposes the caster and roller in inverted position in the hollow of the stove leg out of the way as shown in Fig. 3, so that the lower end of the stove leg can bear directly on the floor or hearth, the supporting surface of which is indicated by the line c. To dispose the caster in operative position, it is only necessary to partly raise the stove, the caster then by gravity swinging to closed position under the stove leg as will be understood.

What is claimed is In combination with a stove leg, of a plate having its rear portion provided with an upstanding boss, said boss being provided with an opening, a pivot within the opening connected with the sides of the leg, a reduced lip upon the forward portion of the plate adapted to contact the edge of the leg, the plate being provided adjacent the lip with an opening, a caster, a pivot bolt for the caster engaging the opening of the plate, a nut for the bolt whereby the forward end of the plate is rendered heavier than the rear or pivoted portion of the plate.
