EDWIN L. COLE, OF PERU, OHIO.
STOVE-LEG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 553,152, dated January 14, 1896. Application filed October 2, 1895. $eria1 No. 564,39I. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWIN L. COLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Peru, in
the county of Huron and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Stove-Leg, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in stove-legs.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of that class of stovelegs which are supplied with casters and to enable the casters to be readily brought into operation when it is desired to move the stove from one point to another and to raise the casters above the floor or other supportingsurface when it is desired to support the stove firmly in position for use or the like.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a stove-leg constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the lower portion of the caster. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the upper portion thereof.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawin gs.
l designates a stove-leg provided at its inner side with a pair of perforated horizontal ears or flanges 2 and 3, which are arranged parallel and have located between them a nut 4:, and the latter engages a threaded stem 5, which passes loosely through the perforations of the flanges, and which carries at its lower end a swiveled caster 6. The nut is adapted to be engaged by a wrench, which is inserted in the space between the upper and lower horizontal flanges 2 and 3. The flanges are adapted to form a support and guide for the wrench and to facilitate its ready engagement with the nut, and by rotating the latter the stem may be raised or lowered, according to the direction in which the nut is rotated, to cause the roller of the caster to project below the lower end of the leg to rest upon the floor or other supporting-surface to enable the stove to be readily moved over the same and also to raise the caster above the floorto cause the leg to rest thereon to prevent any accidental movement or shifting of the stove.
The caster comprises an upper portion, 7, and a lower portion, 8, and the upper portion consists of a disk and a central tubular portion, which forms a journal for the lower portion or bracket. The lower end of the stem is secured within the tubular portion and the bracket or lower portion is provided with a pair of rollers 9 adapted to run 011 the floor, and it has at its top an antifriction-roller l0 bearing against the lower face of the disk of the upper portion. The parts of the caster are secured together by a screw l1,which enters a threaded opening of the tubular portion and which secures a washer 12 to the same of greater diameterthan the opening which is provided in the lower portion or bracket for the reception of the said tubular portion.
It will be seen that the stove-leg is simple and inexpensive in construction, that it is strong and durable, and that the caster may be readily raised and lowered to enable the stove to which it is applied to be readily moved or to rest firmly on its legs.
Changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
What I claim is- The combination of a stove leg provided at its inner side with a pair of parallel horizontal perforated flanges or cars, a nut arranged in the space between the flanges or cars, a threaded stem passing through the perforations of the flanges or ears and engaged by said nut, and a swiveled caster mounted on the lower end of the stem and adapted to be raised and lowered by rotating the nut, sub stantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
EDIVIN L. COLE. lVitnesses E. G. BOUGHTON, LENA M. BOUGHTON.
