CASTE R.
SPBCIFECATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,982, dated September 28, 1886.
Application filed November 9, 1885.
T0 aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, Tnnonoine F. OONKLIN, of Fond du Lac, in the county of Fond du Lac, and in the State of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Casters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to casters; and it consists of certain peculiarities of construction, as will be hereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of one form of my caster in operative position; Fig. 2, .a bottom plan view; Fig. 3, a sectional view on line :r at, Fig. 2, with the shell omitted; Fig. at, a top plan view of the guide-frame; Fig. 5, a vertical longitudinal section of another form of my invention, and Fig. 6 a similar view with the guideframe in a changed position.
A represents a base-plate preferably formed with an up\vardly-projecting shell, (I, so as to render my caster more applicable to articles of furniture having legs; but for trunks or such furniture not supported by legs this shell (I may be omitted. The under face of the baseplate A is provided with an annular groove, 1), and suitable perforations, through which latter are passed screws 0, or similar fastening means for securing the caster to the article upon which it is intended to be used.
Pivotally secured to the base-plate A by means of a rivet or bolt, (1, is a guide-frame, B, having a semicircular outer edge which projects beyond the baseplate to form a buffer, 0. Depending from this guide-frame B are ears f, to which are journaled a main roller, 0, and also depending from said guide-v frame are housings ,,in which are journaled friction-rollers D, which latter operate in the annular groove 1) of the base-plate A, and are entirely iucased by said groove and the housings, so as to exclude dirt or other matter having a tendency to clog or otherwise interfere with the perfect working of my device.
Serial No.18,2,245. (No model.)
It is obvious that instead of forming the base-plate A with an annular groove, 1), 1 may substitute therefor an annular beadfll, and provide the friction-roller D with channels i, as illustrated by Figs. 5 and 6, and thereby obtain the same results without departing from the spirit of my invention, irrespective of the particular form of annular guide.
By extending the guide-frame B so as to come beyond the base-plate, and having its outer edges semicircular, said guide-frame will readily sheer off from any obstruction with which it may come in contact, and thus permit a free working of the several operative parts.
The entire caster being exceedingly simple of construction can be cheaply manufactured, and is not liable to get out of order, and at the same time will sustain a great amount of weight and operate without any material amount of friction.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A caster consisting of a suitable base-plate having an annular guide upon its under side, a pivotally-connected guide-frame having a semicircular outer edge extended beyond said base-plate, a main roller journaled to said guide-frame, and friction-rollers also journaled to the guide-frame and adapted to come in operative contact with the annular guide on the base-plate, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Fond du Lac,
in the county of Fond du Lac and State of Viseonsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
THEODORE F. OONKLIN.
