' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 6, 191?.
Application filed May 6, 1914. Serial No. 836,802.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, CHARLES C. BECKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Kitchen-Cabinet, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to kitchen cabinets.
A cabinet of this character as ordinarily constructed is provided with a slidable leaf or lmeading board adapted to be drawn forwardly from the cabinet so as thus to constitute a leaf or table of considerable area. It has been found, however, that when the said leaf is drawn forward it is impossible to grip the handles of the drawers below the leaf without stooping and bending forward under the leaf.
One of the objects of the present invention is to so mount the drawers in the lower section of theV cabinet that, when the top leaf or table is drawn forward, a housing in which the drawers are mounted will also be drawn forward so that, when the drawers are closed, their front faces will always be disposed in the same relation to the front edge of the top leaf whether or not the said leaf is in retracted or extended position.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings v Figure 1 is a front elevation of a cabinet embodying the present improvements.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, the top leaf and the supplemental housing for the drawers being shown drawn forward.
Fig. 3 is a section through the bottom section of the cabinet, said section being on the line A-B Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a section through a portion of the cabinet on the line C-D Fig. l.
Fig. 5 is a section on line E-F Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one rear corner portion of the slidable section, the same being inverted.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference lQ designates the upper or cupboard section of the `cabinet such as ordinarily usedand 2 designates the base section which, inthe present instance, is in the form of a housing, the bottom frame 3 of which is mounted on casters 4 as ordinarily and is provided atits front corners and within its upper surface, with antifriction rollers 5. A top or leaf 6 is slidably mounted as ordinarily upon the section 2 and is adapted, when not in use, to be partly housed under the upper or covered section 1. This leaf 6'is provided, along its side edges, with depending flanges 7 lapping the upper edges of the sides of the housing 2 so as to prevent them from spreading apart.
Fitting snugly within the casing or housing 2 is -a supplemental casing 8 which bears downwardly on the rollers 5 and is provided, upon the rear corner portions of its bottom, with anti-friction rollers 9 adapted to travel along the bottom frame 3. A caster 10 is connected to the front portion of the supplemental casing 8 and is adapted to travel along the surface on which the casters 4 are mounted. This supplemental casing 8 has a series of drawers l1 slidably mountedtherein and can be provided with a cupboard 12. The leaf 6 eX- tends over the casing 8 and is attached to the top thereof so that, when the said leaf is drawn forward, the supplemental casing 8 will be moved outwardly from the casing or housing 2, as illustrated for example in Fig. 2. When, however, the leaf 6 is pushed back to its normal position, the casing 8 will also move back into the housing 2, bringing its front edge flush or substantially flush with the front of said housing 2.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that when the' leaf 6 is drawn forward, the drawers 1l will be readily accessible and it becomes unnecessary to stoop down and reach under the leaf, as has heretofore been the case.
What is claimed -is-z'-` A kitchen cabinet embodying abase section constituting a housing and having sides and a bottom, an upper section spaced above the base section, the base section being eX- tended forwardly beyond the upper section, .a leaf slidably mounted between the sections lwithin the base section and having its upper portion connected to and closed by said leaf to move therewith, anti-frictional supporting means carried by the supplemental Casing in front of the bottom of the base sec- '10 tion to move upon the supporting surface of the cabinet, anti-friction supporting means carried by the bottom of the base section at its forward edge to support the supplemental easing, and anti-friction means carried by the bottom of the supplemental casing at the rear edge thereof to bear upon the bottom of the base section.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aiiiXed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
