Specification otLetters Patent. Patented Aug-'16, 1910.
Application filed Rovez'nber 22, 1909. Serial No. 529,217.
To all whom it may concern. Y
Beit known that I, HORACE S. GORDON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and to prevent customers or other persons handling-or fingering articles offered 'for sale, such as meat, or other foods which are exposed to View on. counters in stores and markets. v
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this type whichis-cheaply constructed, which allows the articles on a counter to be exposed to view, at the same time preventing persons handling the same, and which may be easily placed in a lowered position to allow the counter to be cleansed.
- In the-accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective-view of the devlce attached to a counter and showing in broken lines, the position of the device when in a lowered position. Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof.
Throughout the specification and drawings similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates a counter of anyconstructio'n upon the outer edges of which are mounted a suitable number of bearings 2 through which passes a rod 3. At the ends of the rod 3, are mount ed'upright rods 4 which are pivotally .at-
i tached at their upper-ends to'a rod 5 which extends parallel with the rod 3. The ends of the rod, 5 are bent at right angles as at 6, and the ends of the an lar portions 6 are attachedto a rod 7 whlch is parallel with the rods 5 and 3. The vertical and horizontal spaces thus formed by the rods 3, 4, 5, 6- and 7 'areoccupied bycross wires 8 forming meshes throu h' which persons may view the articles on t e counter, but which prevent such articles from being-handled.
It will be understood thatthe device may be position on the counter.
tion the guard is prevented from'rotating of any size and length and that ordinarily itwill extend thefull length of a counter.
The extreme outer ends of the rods 3, which may be separate attached portions, are bent at right angles and extend obliquely as at 9, and are provided with eyes 10 which engage the extended ends '11 of the. rod 7. The angular portions 9 form a brace to maintain the vertical mesh portion of the guard, and the horizontal meshportion at approximately right angles when the guard is in When'in this posiin the bearings 2, by braces 12 which stand upright and rest upon the counter and which are attached at their upper ends to the rod 7. When it is desired to cleanse the counter, the extensions 9 are sprung outwardly and the eyes 10 are released from the ends of the rod 7, thereby allowing the device to be drop ed or placed in the position.
the counter unobstructed.
I claim: 1. In a guard of the type specified, a vershown in dotte lines in Fig. 1, which leaves tical mesh portion pivotally connected to a counter, a horizont mesh portion pivotally connected to'said vertical portion, a brace adapted to hold said vertical and horizontal portions at substantially right angles, and a brace mounted on the free edge of said horizontal portion and adapted to support said vertical and horizontal portions.
2. In a guard for the purposes specified, a vertical mesh portion having upper and lower'horizontal rods and end vertical rods, a horizontal portion pivoted to saidvertical portion and having-an outer horizontal rod V and end rods, said lower horizontal rod of the vertical mesh portion being extended at right angles and adapted'to engage the outer horizontal rod of said horizontal portion whereby said vertical and horizontal portions are held substantially at right angles, braces attached to the said outer horizontal rod and adaptedflto support the vertical and horizontal portions, and pivot pieces for attaching the lower end of the vertical mesh portion to a counter.
Intestimony whereof-I affix my signature,
'in presenceof two witnesses.
. HORACE S. GORDON. Witnesses: 1
