UNI ED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GHILION JONES, of'eaimnooun, on'mnro, CANADA.
HANDLE FOR SHOVELS AND LIKE TOOLS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 16, 1910.
Application filed llarch 31, 1909, Serial No. 487,088. Renewed July 2, 1910. Serial No. 570,188.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OHILION JONES, of Gananoque, in the county of Leeds, Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handles for Shovels and Like Tools, of which My invention relates to improvements in handles for shovels or like tools, particularly of the type in which the end of the handle is bifurcated to receive a cross bar, and the objects of my invention are to provide improved protecting means for the edges of the handles and for the joints between the bifurcated portion and the cross bar, further objects being to generally im prove and simplify the construction of the handle: and it consists essentially of a bifur cated handle having rabbets formed on the inner sides and a cross bar fitting in the rabbets, caps extending over the corner and over the joints between the cross bar and the bifurcated. ends, and a rivet pin connecting the caps and extending through the cross bar, all as hereinafter more fully set forth and described in detail in the accompanying specifications and drawings.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of the handle. Fig. 2 IS the same View partially in section. Fig. 3 is an end view of the handle. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 2 2, Fig. 2.
In the drawings, like figures of reference indicate correspondingparts in each figure.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the handle, which may be used for a shovel, spade or any similar tool, the upper end of whichis bifurcated and formed with di vergent ends 10 and 11, which are shaped as shown. In accordance with the invention, the extremities of these ends are formed with rabbets l2 and 13 on the inside, adapted to receive a cross bar 14 which forms the grip for the hand of the user.
To protect the edges of the joint between the cross bar and the ends, caps 15 and 16 are provided, the said caps extending over the ends and over the joint between the cross bar 14 and the ends; the said caps further extending fartherdown the handle than to the rabbets 12 and 13, whereby they will effectually protect the lower edges of the rabbets. It is desirable that said caps should be flush with the surface of the cross bar, and to accomplish this recesses 19 and 20 are provided and the caps are sunk in said recesses.
The caps are connected together by means of asuitable pin 17, which extends through the cross bar 14, and through the ends 10 and 11 andcaps 15 and 16, being preferably riveted on the outer side of said caps. To protect the root of the bifurcated end, a strengthening rivet 18 may-be provided. It will be observed that the inner edges of the cap lie substantially in the same plane as the inner surface of the bifurcated ends and thus the ends do not project in any way, such as would render them likely to Be caught by the hand or garment of the user. At the same time, however, the joint is thoroughly protected, owing to the fact that'the cross bars extend into the rabbets provided on the bifurcated ends.
What I claim as my invention is A handle for shovels and the like comprising a shank formed with bifurcated ends-having rabbets on the inner side, a cross bar extending in said rabbets, end caps extending over the bifurcatedends and covering the juncture between the cross bar and the ends, the said caps extending farther down the handle than the rabbets, whereby they' will protect the lower edges of the rabbets, and a pin extending through the cross bar and connecting the caps.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set I my hand in the presence of two wltnesses.
