To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GABRIEL CIooIoLA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leavenworth, in the county of Leavenworth and State of Kansas, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Leggings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention has for its object to provide a legging or gaiter which is simple in construction, so that it may be manufactured at comparativelylittle cost, and which is adapted to be quickly placed on or taken off by the wearer, and which is moreover convenient and effective in use.

To this end the improved legging comprises a body portion of leather, canvas or any other suitable material, shaped to fit the leg of the wearer, and having overlapping edges at one side. To the outer of the said overlapping edges, and near the top and bottom portions thereof, is attached a strap which is forked for a portion of its length, the forked portion meeting about midway of the length of the strap to form a single strap at or about the center of the length of the legging, and the free end of the single portion of said strap being secured, when the legging is in use, by a buckle or other suitable fastening device located about midway the height or length of the legging.

The improved legging is provided at its bottom with a strap which is to be passed beneath the foot of the wearer, the said 1 bottom strap being attached to the body of the legging on one side thereof opposite the overlapping parts of the legging, and the free end of said strap being engaged with a buckle or other suitable fastening device which is located adjacent the overlapping edges of the legging. The overlapping ply of the legging is provided near its bottom with one or more vertical slits through which the buckle, which has a swiveled attachment to the other ply of the legging, may be passed in a vertical position, the swiveled attachement of the buckle permittin the latter to be swung around to a horizontal position so as to have a proper arrangement relative to the bottom strap to enable the latter to be engaged therewith.

In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved legging in a closed and fastened condition.

Fig. 2 is a side view of the same with the straps unfastened, and Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views to illustrate the swiveled attachment of the buckle.

Referring to the drawings, 12 denotes the body of one legging which may be of leather, canvas or any other suitable material. To said body, near the middle portion thereof, vertically, and adjacent to the innermost of the overlapping edges of said body, is secured a buckle 13 and also preferably a keeper loop 14., Attached to the outermost of the overlapping edges of said body and near the top and bottom of said edges is a forked strap 15, the forked portions of said strap uniting near the middle of the length of said strap to form a single strap, so that when the said strap is wrapped around the legging, as shown in Fig. 1, the said single portion may be engaged with the buckle 13 to fasten said strap in place.

To the bottom of the legging, and at that side thereof opposite the overlapping edges of the legging, is attached a strap 16 adapted to be passed beneath the foot of the wearer to hold the legging down. The outermost of the overlapping edges of the body of the legging is provided near its bottom with one or more vertical slits 17 through which may be passed a buckle 18 having a swiveled connection with the legging body near the bottom of the other of said overlapping edges. The swiveled connection of said buckle with the body of the legging permits the buckle to be turned vertically when it is to be passed through either of the vertical slits 17, and to be swung around into horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 1, for proper engagement with the bottom strap 16, the free end of said strap, when the latter is secured to the buckle, being preferably held in place by a keeper 19.

By providing a plurality of vertical slits 17 it will be understood that the legging may be adjusted, at its overlapping bottom portion, to make it larger or smaller, to fit different wearers; while the swiveled shank of the buckle will serve as a stop to prevent the legging from being drawn inward too far at its bottom portion when the encircling forked strap is tightened around the legging.

It will be understood that different forms of buckles or fastening devices from those herein shown may be employed, if desired, without departing from the spirit of the invention, and that the body of the improved legging may consist of a single piecenof leather or other suitable material, or may consist of several pieces properly shaped and attached together, either with or without stiffening devices or stays, and the invention is therefore not to be understood as being limited to the specific constructions herein shown and described.

Having thus described my invention I. claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A legging comprising a body portion having overlapping edges, said body portion being provided near its vertical central portion and near one of said edges with a fastening device, a forked strap attached to the other of said overlapping edges near the top and bottom thereof, a single portion of said forked strap being adapted to be engaged by said fastening devicewhen said strap is wrapped around the legging, the outermost of said overlapping edges being provided near its bottom with one or more ,Vverticalslits, a buckle having a swiveled attachment to the bodyvof the legging near the innermost of said overlapping edges of said body, and a bottom strap attached to one side of said legging and the free end of which is to be engaged by said buckle.

2. A legging comprising a body portion having overlappingedges the outermost of which is provided near its bottom with one or more vertical slits and the innermost of which is provided near its bottom with a buckle having a swiveled connection therewith, a bottom strap secured at one end to said body portion of said legging and the free end of which is to be engaged with said buckle.
